The history of Ukrainian civil aviation is inextricably linked with the Kharkov airport, located in the city of the same name. It was here, back in 1923, that a joint-stock company called Ukrovozdukhput was established, whose tasks included organizing regular flights. Today, Kharkov Airport is one of the most important transport hubs in Ukraine. We suggest you get to know this harbor more closely, learning about its characteristics, history, and services offered. We will also find out how to get to the Kharkov airport, the telephone number of the air harbor and the address of its official website.
History
As already mentioned, the airport in the city of Kharkov began its work in 1923. With the beginning of World War II, additional concrete runways were built here. The aerodrome itself was actively used by Soviet military aircraft. However, during the hostilities the territory of the air harbor was repeatedly subjected to massive bombing, as a result of which both the take-off field and all buildings were almost completely destroyed.
The construction of a new airport began in 1951 on a standard design. It is interesting that under the same project, air harbors were erected in other cities - Lviv and Yekaterinburg. The newly rebuilt Kharkov air harbor began its work in 1954.
Kharkiv Airport today
Since 2008, the entire airport complex (with the exception of the runway, which is a strategic public facility) has been leased by New Systems AM. With the help of Austrian and German experts, a project was developed for a large-scale reconstruction of the air harbor, which was immediately launched. As a result, in August 2010, a new passenger terminal was opened, with a capacity of 650 people per hour. The old airport building was also reconstructed, which was transformed into a terminal serving VIP passengers. In 2011, a new runway was put into operation, the length of which was two and a half thousand meters. Thanks to her, Kharkov Airport was able to receive large airliners designed for direct flights over medium distances. In August 2013, the air harbor set a record by landing AN-124 Ruslan, which has the largest take-off mass among all the aircraft that ever landed in Kharkov, on its airfield.
