Turbulence in an airplane: how dangerous is it?

Those who prefer to fly while traveling have probably experienced turbulence on the plane at least once. And although this phenomenon is not observed in every flight, it will not be superfluous to learn more about it. As a rule, everything happens as follows: the commander announces that the plane was in turbulence, asks passengers to sit down and fasten their seat belts. And then the so-called chatter begins, sometimes there are times when the luggage racks open and things fly around the cabin. Yes, this may seem very scary, but more often than not there is no reason to be scared, although at such moments some passengers may feel nauseous. What you should know about turbulence in an airplane?

First of all, it does not depend on the qualifications of the pilot. He doesnโ€™t shake the plane, and far from always he can avoid getting into a dudger for various reasons, which will be discussed below. You just need to know that such a phenomenon as a turbulence zone in an airplane is, in most cases, outside its power. As a rule, the autopilot is disabled only in the most serious cases. And you must always remember that not a single pilot will fly directly into the turbulence zone,

if he can avoid getting into it.

So why is this phenomenon sometimes observed and sometimes not? What does it even depend on? The point is in the air flows: ascending and descending. Most often, these vortex flows are in the center of mass of thunderclouds. But sometimes they are observed at the edge of a dangerous area, and their presence is not so simple to determine. Another possible reason is the so-called jet currents. These are flows whose horizontal or vertical speed changes dramatically. Most often, this phenomenon is observed off the eastern coast of North America.

Turbulence in an aircraft can be observed even in a cloudless sky, and it is not always possible to quickly leave the danger zone, especially where the movement of the aircraft is quite dense. The problem is that you must comply

the distance between the airliners in order to avoid their collision, so the flight route should in such cases be followed very strictly.

There is no evidence that turbulence in itself can seriously damage an airliner. They are designed in such a way that even with the strongest chatter they will not fall apart in the air, this is checked specially. Nevertheless, one should not underestimate turbulence in an airplane. Even if it seems that the danger is small, you must follow the instructions of the crew and the messages on the light boards,

buckle up and keep calm. Those who neglect safety measures run the risk of injury, even very serious fractures.

Sometimes vortex flows occur over airports. This is already more dangerous, because the aircraft is at low altitude and may collide with the ground. Nevertheless, in any situation that the crew considers dangerous, it is most likely that a decision will be made to land at the alternate aerodrome. Do not be afraid if the flight attendants and the pilot report this, but not a cloud outside the window. As a rule, passengers simply cannot see such problems, so there is no need to be nervous: the crew is always primarily concerned about the safety of passengers.
