The Ufa Institute of Eye Diseases is one of the oldest ophthalmological institutions in Russia and the entire post-Soviet space. The main activities of this multidisciplinary state organization are science, treatment and consultation, production and education in this area. Ufa Scientific Research Institute of Eye Diseases is engaged in the development of fundamental and applied problems in the field of ophthalmology, provides effective treatment with the active use of high technologies of all types of cataracts, pathologies of the vitreous body and retina, as well as refractive surgery.
History of occurrence
The famous institute began its existence back in 1926, when the old eye hospital with 50 beds was transformed into the Bashkir trachomatous research institute with the aim of actively combating these common diseases at that time. Having become a hospital during the war from 1941 to 1945, the institute continued its work as a scientific organization, and in 1965 it became known as the Ufa Research Institute of Eye Diseases of the Ministry of Health of the RSFSR. The institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Belarus, and after - RAMS, the institute began in 1992.

The institution was always headed by the most eminent doctors, honored scientists and academics (Odintsov, Spassky, Kudoyarov, Kalmetieva, Aznabaev). Since 2006, the chief doctor of the institute has been a doctor of medical sciences, honored doctor of Belarus, professor M.M. Bikbov. When contacting the adult department, the patient receives a qualified consultation of specialists, undergoes a certain diagnosis, and he is issued a medical report indicating the diagnosis and a list of recommended treatments. In some cases, a one-day examination of the patient is not enough, and therefore it is recommended to him to take out a hospital for a detailed comprehensive examination.
The children's department of the Ufa Research Institute of Eye Diseases accepts small patients with various problems for free: pathology of the eyelids and lacrimal canals, myopia, strabismus, astigmatism, cataracts, glaucoma and other ophthalmic diseases, as well as suspicions of them. Reviews of children's ophthalmologists indicate that conducting ophthalmological operations and a complex of special treatment for children at an early age largely determines their high efficiency.
Performance indicators
Research Institute of Eye Diseases has the most modern operating rooms, as well as unique diagnostic equipment. For consultations at the Research Institute of Eye Diseases, not only Russians, but also residents of other countries apply. According to the Institute’s statistics, about 80 thousand patients come to be treated every year, and over the past five-year period this figure has amounted to about 500 thousand people. The number of eye surgeries performed at the research institute today exceeds 140 thousand.
During the 2013 scientific-practical ophthalmological conference called “East - West”, the UV Research Institute of Eye Diseases showed several unique operations in real time. More than a hundred Russian ophthalmologists observed the work of Ufa surgeons, which they performed on the latest equipment, which has no analogues among other Russian clinics, established with the participation of the Ural charity foundation.

Types of operations
Every year, the number of cataract surgeries performed (congenital, traumatic, age-related) with minimal incisions and subsequent implantation of an IOL is growing. One of the first institutions in the Russian Federation where the practical use of medical and economic standards for cataract surgery was introduced in a minimally invasive way was the Research Institute of Eye Diseases. Microinvasive drainage operations with respect to glaucoma showed a high therapeutic effect: for this, valves and drains of different models are used.
Bullous keratopathy is effectively cured at the institute: for this purpose, automated endothelial keratoplasty with the manufacture of donor corneal material is used. The scientific department of vitreoretinal and laser surgery deals with all kinds of problems of the retina.
Modern types of lasers are used in the treatment of various pathological diseases, due to which there is not only a chance for recovery, but also the possibility of a significant improvement in the quality of life in patients with severe lesions of the retina and vitreous body.
Hi-tech
With great success in practice, scientific inventions have been used to treat degenerative diseases of the cornea of the eye - UV irradiation with riboflavin during crosslinking followed by implantation of corneal rings and segments. It was in the Ufa Scientific Research Institute of Eye Diseases that a unique technology of epikeratoplasty with keratoconus was developed, which was included in the ten most significant achievements of world ophthalmology (according to the famous journal Ophthalmology times).
In the department of hospital-replacing technologies, neoplasms are successfully removed, blepharoplasty is performed. In addition, dacryocystitis is treated with a laser with minimal trauma.
Pleopto-orthoptic treatment of childhood problems of strabismus, refractive errors of various etiologies is also successfully carried out using laser surgery. Highly qualified assistance to children in the hospital is provided from the first days of life.
The effectiveness of surgical treatment in the children's department is characterized by the highest rates due to the use of new approaches in the surgery of glaucoma, congenital cataracts and retinopathy in premature babies.
