Mirny Airport is a regional transport hub in the Republic of Yakutia. It is located just 4 km from the village of the same name. Flights from here are operated mainly to major Siberian airports. It also serves as a backup airfield for aircraft of transcontinental flights from America to Asian countries.
Mirny Airport (Sakha): history
The airport in Mirny was founded back in the Soviet era. In the 60-70s of the last century, active development of oil and gas and diamond deposits in Yakutia began. In 1971, the Mirny Air Squad was formed, the main task of which was to ensure transportation in the developing region of the republic. In the same year, it was decided to build an airport in Mirny. The staff of the squadron at that time was about 3.5 thousand people.
In the 80s the work of the enterprise team was the most productive. The fleet was gradually replenished with new helicopters designed to carry goods. The number of flights has doubled compared to the 1970s.
In 1991, the Mirny Aviation Squad was merged with the Diamonds of Russia - Sakha Joint-Stock Company. Thanks to this, two years later the fleet was replenished with the Il-76 cargo plane.
Since its inception, the terminal building has been reconstructed more than once. Currently, it is planned to carry out work to modernize the complex, infrastructure and expand the route network.
