The Lesya Ukrainka Theater (Dneprodzerzhinsk) has been around for almost a hundred years. It is very popular with residents and visitors. The repertoire of the theater is quite rich and multi-genre.
Theater History
The first acting troupes, both professional and amateur, began to tour Dneprodzerzhinsk in 1900. Lesia Ukrainka Theater was founded in 1920 on the basis of an amateur collective. Led by amateur artists N. Lopatetsky. Then it was the Theater of Working Youth.
In 1935, it began to be called differently. Now it was the Russian Drama Theater. M. M. Khataevich. The troupe worked very successfully from the very beginning, and over two years 10 new performances were staged. In 1937, the troupe expanded to hundreds of people.
In the same year, the city of Kamenskoye was renamed Dneprodzerzhinsk. Mendel Khataevich, then named after the theater, was declared a spy and arrested. From this moment, the team was given the name of Taras Shevchenko.
During the war, the theater was evacuated to Kazakhstan. There, the artists continued to work actively. After the Second World War, the theater was transferred to the city of Krivoy Rog. And in Dneprodzerzhinsk a mobile troupe began work. In 1956, she was named after Lesya Ukrainka.
In 1962, the theater was closed, as a decree was issued to reduce the number of theater troupes in cities.
In 1979, a musical drama theater was opened in the city. The troupe was recruited from all over the USSR on a competitive basis. The main director of the new theater was appointed Semyon Tereykovsky. The troupe played its first performance in 1981.
In the 80s there were rapid changes. The directors have changed. The repertoire became different. The theater tried to feel the modern viewer, understand his problems, find a common language with him, and become understandable to him. The performances became more relevant for that time. They paid attention to the problems of that era.
In addition to musical comedies and operettas, the repertoire included musicals, which then only began to gain fame and popularity in the Soviet Union.
Then there were performances: “Counterpoints”, “A Wedding for Old Age”, “Nightingale”, “Choreographic Offering”, “My Fair Lady”, “Fatum”, “Dog Heart”, “Facets”, “Track” and others.
Back in the 90s of the 20th century, the theater began to actively and tour a lot. At the same time, in connection with the arrival of a new director in the troupe, the repertoire policy is changing. Now the bulk of the productions are performances created from classical works.
In 1995, the theater almost stopped releasing premieres, as the country's economic difficulties led to the cessation of its financing. Many actors left because they stopped paying wages. There were no material means for new productions either. After 2 years, the situation improved, some artists returned to the theater. It has been refurbished. The enterprises of the city provided him with financial support.
The name Lesia Ukrainka returned to the name of the theater in 2000. At the same time, the troupe was updated, young cadres joined it. Then, over the next 10 years, it replenished twice more.
Today, the post of chief director is Vladimir Saranchuk.
Many performances of the Lesya Ukrainka Theater were awarded prestigious prizes. And also became winners of competitions and festivals.

Its name speaks for itself. Within the framework of the festival, troupes show their best performances staged from the works of classical drama.
Impressions are competitive. That is, artists compete with each other. This is the essential difference between this festival and many others.
Prizes are awarded in the nominations: male and female roles, directorial work, best supporting actors, etc.
After the demonstration of the productions, discussions are held where the jury members give a professional assessment of the competition works. And also master classes, seminars, conferences, exhibitions are held.
The winners of the festival are awarded with diplomas, figurines, souvenirs and valuable gifts.
Reviews
The Lesya Ukrainka Theater (Dneprodzerzhinsk) receives most enthusiastic reviews from the audience. The audience likes, first of all, the game of actors. They conquer the audience with their talents, skills to get used to the image, the way they convey the emotions and feelings of their characters. Most of the performances were staged interestingly, and viewing them gives a lot of pleasure. The music in the productions is selected remarkably and does not interfere with perception, but on the contrary, it perfectly complements the play of artists.
Negative reviews can be found about children's theater productions, especially about the fairy tale "The Scarlet Flower". Parents write that the Beast was dressed in an ostrich-like costume, for some reason at the beginning of the performance there was a postman Pechkin, who shouted very loudly, and his children were scared.
