History
Chomutovo Airport (Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk) was founded in 1945 immediately after the region was liberated from Japanese troops after the war. An air squad was created. In October of this year, the airport began to operate regular flights from Khabarovsk.
From 1946 until 1960, the airfield complex served aviation regiments No. 296 and 96, which were stationed here to carry out air defense missions.
In the 1950s, Soviet-made Il-14 aircraft entered the civilian squadron. These aircraft subsequently made flights to Kirovskoye, Okhu and Khabarovsk. Also, Mi-type helicopters (1 and 4 modifications) were transferred to the air squad.
By 1964, the Khomutovsky airfield complex, which is located on the site of a modern airport, was commissioned. Thanks to this, it became possible to receive and send such airliners as the Il-18 and An-10.
In the 1970s and until 1985, the civilian squadron received, in addition, Mi helicopters (1, 2, 4, and 8 modifications) and Il-14 and An-2 (24) airliners. By 1985, the airfield complex was completely ready for servicing the Tu-154.
In 1990, the airport began to serve international transport. And in 2013, he became an open joint stock company as a result of the reorganization.
Services
Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Airport provides passengers with many services. On the territory of the airport complex there is parking. The terminal building has a left-luggage office, a playroom for children, various bars, restaurants, snack bars, a post office, and duty-free shops in the international zone. Disabled passengers are provided with a free escort service. There is also a VIP lounge where passengers are served for a fee.
