PC operator: features, specifics and requirements

A fairly common position in modern trading companies, which is offered to young or novice professionals in the field of finance, accounting or data processing, is the PC operator. What is the essence and specificity of this work and how realistic are the prospects for further career growth after this post?

Most often, working as a PC operator implies the presence of certain knowledge in the field of computer programs designed to process and store data. The most common of these is the 1C program, created to store and process information about the movement of goods in trading enterprises and firms for the production of goods.

The duties of the specialist holding the position of PC operator include the creation of a database of counterparties with whom the company cooperates, the introduction of primary freight invoices into the database, as well as the detailed registration of all movements of goods between sellers (suppliers) and buyers (retail or wholesale).

Since this kind of work requires the specialist who is engaged in it first of all to be diligent and attentive, and secondly - to speed up work and accuracy, often the managers of the company prefer to consider this position as a kind of intermediate link in the career of a young specialist. Therefore, if a novice employee for several years has shown his good qualities during the performance of all the duties that a PC operator has, he will have a very real chance of moving, for example, to the position of assistant accountant or economist.

In general, the career movement from this position can go in two directions - accounting and trading. If a young employee has an education in accounting, then it would be advisable to find a similar job even at the time of receiving an education. Having submitted a resume for a job, a PC operator, even without any work experience, but with a minimum amount of knowledge gained during education, you can safely count on getting a similar position in a trading company. And in the future, a novice specialist can only prove himself as an excellent, attentive and executive employee, and by the time you receive a diploma, you can safely claim a higher position.

Work as a PC operator can be an ideal choice for those employees who do not dream about career growth, but who are quite happy with stable and uncomplicated work in the office. In this case, the employee receives a stable salary (which is usually slightly higher than the salaries of trade workers in the same industry) and a fairly simple job that does not require regular study of new data. If there is a properly organized database in which the fixation of all goods movements was carried out correctly, the operator’s work will be reduced only to the introduction of new information.

In some trading organizations, the work of the PC operator is combined with the functions of goods acceptance with the subsequent replenishment of the database with new arrivals. In this case, a novice young employee has a chance to gain experience in the commercial area and his further career can be built already in this area. But it is worth remembering that in the case of such specifics of work, the PC operator becomes a financially responsible person.

In general, such a position is often combined with the duties of related specialties - a merchandiser, accountant, administrator, or senior cashier. Therefore, choosing a vacancy for which a resume will be submitted, it is worth learning more about the job responsibilities of the PC operator in this particular company in order to make the right decision.
