The total amount of time spent watching a TV, tablet, phone or computer is increasing. All age categories are affected by the listed electronic devices. In order not to worsen your health, it is worth knowing whether the computer spoils the vision and how to save it.
Can a computer damage my eyesight?
Disputes in this regard have not ceased since the appearance of the first monitors. The discussion has been going on for many years, although it is difficult to imagine a person who does not interact with monitors at all. Each party has reason to believe its opinion is correct.
The first monitors released had built-in radiation tubes. Radiation from such a device had a negative effect on a person, affecting not the best way in his eyes. Modern monitors are manufactured using a different technology, they are equipped with a liquid crystal screen, which does not emit anything.
But it is worthwhile to understand that the influence of a computer on vision is noticeable not only because of the monitor device.
Why is a computer harmful to eyesight?
Vision worsens for several reasons:
- Incorrect monitor settings. In preparation for work, you need to properly adjust the image characteristics. The lack of a clear picture, a heavily readable font and poor-quality text design leads to excessive eye strain. You need to set the correct resolution for the monitor. Ideally, you need to achieve clarity of the picture, which will be easier to perceive with the eyes.
- Excessive time spent at the computer. Long-term work can lead to visual impairment from the monitor (whether it spoils completely or is there a chance to save it, we will consider in preventive measures). Office workers, after a day of intensive work with a computer, experience discomfort in their eyes. There is a feeling of dryness, redness and tiredness of the eyes.
- Lack of lighting. If you have to work in a dark room, there is a serious impact on the optic nerve. Itβs hard for the eye to quickly rebuild from a light screen to a dark room.
- The location of the computer. It is necessary according to the norms to install a computer and a monitor at a distance of 60 centimeters from the eyes.

Symptoms of visual impairment
Each person's vision deteriorates at a different speed. Some spend days at the computer without fatigue, while others spend half a day on the monitor. The main symptoms by which you can determine that vision falls from the computer, look like this:
- Unpleasant sensation in the eyes. The main indicators of eye fatigue: dryness, burning, tearing. Such symptoms occur, since a person, focusing on the monitor, blinks less often.
- Blurry in the eyes. This is the next stage after fatigue. If you work indoors with smoke or in poor lighting, your eyes will get tired faster.
- The appearance of pain in the neck, shoulders and back indicates that the body is in an uncomfortable position, which leads to insufficient saturation of organs with oxygen and blood, including the eyes.
- Dizziness and pain in the head. It is considered the most dangerous symptom, manifested during long work at the computer.
The question immediately arises - does the computer spoil the vision? With a fair amount of confidence, it can be argued that it spoils. But this process takes place individually for each person. In order to prevent this situation, it is necessary to give the eyes time to rest.
Possible complications
All of the above symptoms appear due to the long work at the computer. But these signs can also apply to serious eye diseases. In order not to confuse the symptoms, it is necessary to visit an ophthalmologist several times a year.
Preventive measures
A person will no longer be able to abandon computers and all kinds of gadgets, so it is necessary to reduce the risk of spoiling your eyes. To do this, you must adhere to simple rules, thanks to which the eyes will be comfortable to work with. The basic rule is the use of high-quality computer monitors that are safe for vision. Experts give the following recommendations to maintain visual function at the proper level:
- For painless operation, it is recommended to put the smallest resolution with a frequency of 80 Hz on the monitor.
- The contrast of the monitor is adjusted to the maximum, the picture should be clear.
- The optimal eye distance from the monitor is considered to be 60-70 cm, and its inclination should not exceed 15 Β°. Expand it so that there are no unnecessary glare.
- Reading any information or watching a video, it is not recommended to peer at an object strongly.
- The eyes need rest: preferably five minutes every hour.
- Try to blink more often, this will prevent drying out of the eyes.
- If you have to spend a lot of time daily at the computer, you need to add to the diet products that can positively affect vision (carrots, celery, blueberries, nuts).
- For work wear special glasses that can relieve tension from the eyes.
- You should regularly visit an ophthalmologist.
- Perform eye exercises at any free time.
Eye drops
To preserve vision, a person who spends a lot of time behind the monitor needs eye drops from eye fatigue. From the computer, namely, from its harm to the body, drugs of the following categories can help:
- Acting on the restoration of the mucous membrane of the eye.
- Providing hydration.
- Drops against edema.
The table below will help you figure this out.

Gymnastics for the eyes
With the help of exercises for the eyes, you can not only restore the vision lost at work, but also achieve optimal performance. They are carried out twice a day: in the morning and in the evening. At the same time, the head should be stationary, and all exercises are performed with one eye. Their movements should be as amplitude as possible. The following course is carried out:
- In the vertical direction, move your eyes up, then down.
- In the horizontal direction, move the eyes to the right and left.
- Diagonal movements from right to left and back.
- Next is the figure eight in the vertical position.
- Eight in a horizontal position.
- A big circle is made through the eyes, making stops like on the dial of each digit. After we repeat the exercise, stopping only at marks 6 and 12.
The whole complex consists of 8 repetitions for each exercise. After completing the execution, the eyes need to rest (quick blinking). After the end of general gymnastics, you can cover your eyes with your hands and rest for at least 10 minutes.
To complicate the task, the exercises are carried out with closed eyelids, so the lens of the eye is also massaged.
Does the computer spoil the vision or it falls for other reasons, but the above exercises can help restore it if the case does not belong to the category of running ones.
How to relax after a long work at the computer?
After a long working day, the eyes need proper rest. Playing computer games or watching TV shows, this will not work. Useful are:
- walks in the fresh air, as sunlight positively affects the retina;
- warming up all the muscles of the back and neck;
- do not forget about exercises for the eyes;
- drinking plain water and eating fruit is recommended;
- wear glasses for vision;
- drink tea to improve vision, which can be purchased at the pharmacy.
An important point is the use of vitamin A, it is useful for the retina. Drinking it is recommended in courses, continuous use is prohibited.
So, does a computer spoil vision? Yes, itβs clear to everyone that itβs spoiling. But it is also clear that observing the simple rules of prophylaxis and giving rest to the eyes after hard work, you can not complain about its deterioration for many years.
