Error 797 when connecting to the Internet through a modem: causes and methods of correction

Many users who connect to the Internet via VPN or PPPoE protocols using a modem may encounter error 797 during the connection setup phase. Some immediately blame the equipment used. But, in fact, the reason for such a failure can be of a completely different nature. Next, several simple methods will be proposed that will get rid of this problem in a few minutes.

Windows 7 error when connecting to 797 Internet: reasons for the failure

In the case when the system displays a message that it is unable to establish a connection, because the modem used is busy or not found, the device itself is usually to blame only in case of damage or inoperability. In such a situation, it will have to be replaced.

But usually in Windows 7, error 797 is issued for other reasons, among which the most common are the following:

  • failure in the established network connection;
  • deactivated device;
  • Missing, outdated, or improperly installed drivers
  • Incorrect IPv4 protocol settings
  • blocking the connection with the system’s security features and antiviruses.

Recreating a connection

To begin, consider the easiest way to fix the problem, if it is associated with violations in the established connection.

You can try to get rid of error 797 as follows:

  • go to the "Network and Sharing Center" in the "Control Panel";
  • Use changing the properties of the network adapter;
  • through the PCM menu, delete the established connection;
  • return to the initial section and create the connection again.

It is possible that reconstituting the connection will help, although, as a rule, there is little hope for this. Therefore, you will have to use other methods that in most cases fix the problem.

Modem 797 Error: Default Device Activation and Driver Installation Issues

At this point, you should check whether the connected device itself is activated. Especially this measure is relevant for those cases when several devices are used to establish communication.

error 797 modem

To perform such actions, go to the properties of the connection used and on the first tab ("General") in the list of installed devices, tick your modem. If you see that another device is checked, uncheck it, since using both of them can cause conflicts.

If the modem is not listed, or it is, but error 797 is displayed again, go to the “Device Manager” and check if everything is ok with the drivers. If the modem is marked with a yellow triangle, uninstall the driver or even the device itself and reinstall the control software again using the software carrier provided by the service provider. If this does not help, and error 797 appears again, uninstall the operator’s software through the programs and components section, and then reinstall.

IP settings

If all the above actions did not resolve the problem, use the properties of the connection used for the modem and go to the IPv4 protocol settings.

Please note that for modems, static addresses are never registered. That is, the settings should indicate the automatic receipt of IP and DNS addresses. In extreme cases, you can only use DNS addresses that you can find out from the operator (if their use is provided), or register free Google addresses (usually a combination of eights and fours).

Just in case, in the properties of the connection, deactivate the use of IPv6 (if this line is checked, just uncheck it), since it is unlikely that the operator uses such a connection based on the sixth version DHCP server.

Disabling possible locks

Finally, one of the possible reasons for the appearance of such a failure when trying to establish a connection through a modem, many experts call it blocking by the Windows firewall or a regular antivirus (very often such problems are observed when using Avast).

error 797

First, turn off the firewall (although doing this, by the standards of the system itself, is not recommended). If this does not help, temporarily disable the protection and check the connection. If everything works, it is better to change the antivirus software to a software product of another developer.

What if nothing helps?

If none of the above solutions has a positive effect, try using the RMB menu on the connection icon in the system tray to call the diagnostic tool and troubleshoot network connections. Perhaps during the verification process the problems will be found and fixed. If this does not happen, it may very well be that the system will issue some recommendations for correcting the situation. If this does not work, contact the operator or equipment manufacturer for advice on troubleshooting or for checking the modem’s functionality.
