The beginning of the 90s for Russia was a time of great growth in organized crime. The aggravated criminal situation became an impetus for the creation of special quick response units (CORD), designed to strengthen the existing police units (OMON).
For the new power formations, army small arms were intended, the use of which in urban conditions posed a threat to the lives of civilians. Specially for carrying out police special operations by weapons designers, the OTs-11 βTissβ submachine gun was developed.
Weapon creation
The standard model of the Tiss submachine gun is the standard model AKS-74 U. The designers were working on its creation: V.N. Telesh and Yu.V. Lebedev at TsKIB in Tula.
The work took three years. In 1993, special units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation were equipped with the first batch of new unified weapons. Despite the high reviews from the security forces, the Tiss assault rifle was not taken into serial production by the Tula Arms Plant.
Trigger mechanism
Machine "Tiss" allows you to fire both single and in line. Rate of fire reaches 800 rounds per minute. The USM design uses the energy of powder gases, which are removed during a shot through a special side hole in the barrel. The channel is locked by a rotary lock, which is fixed by two combat stops. By means of the flag translator of the fire mode, the fuse function is performed. This translator is located on the right side of the receiver. After turning it on, the trigger is locked. The shutter frame receives a travel limit.
The performance characteristics of the unified model
- The length of the machine with an open butt is 73 cm.
- With the butt folded - 49 cm.
- The trunk has a length of 20 cm.
- The weight of the machine without ammunition is 2.5 kg.
- The caliber used is 9 x 39 mm.
- Ammunition designed SP.5 and SP.6.
- The capacity of the vending machine is 20 ammunition.
- The weapon has an aiming range at a distance of 400 meters.
Production of a receiver for OTsTs-11 "Tiss"
Automatic machine AKS-74 U (design and method of manufacturing the model) was used by the developers to create a steel receiver for creating a unified model. In the production of receiver boxes for these machines, a high-performance sheet metal stamping technique is used. As a result, the design of the boxes in both versions are no different from each other.
Machine βTissβ and its prototype: what is common?
- When creating weapons for police special forces, the automatic reloading mechanism was borrowed from the AKS-74U.
- The presence of a folding buttstock and pistol grip.
How do machines differ from each other?
- Existence of open mechanical sights in the Tiss model. The machine (the photo below shows the design features) has improved aiming range and accuracy of fire compared to its prototype.
- More compact in comparison with the AKS-74U, carrying out combat power in a new modified automatic box-shaped detachable magazines. In the βTissβ weapon model, the store is designed for twenty ammunition.
- The automatic machine for police special forces is designed for firing with cartridges of caliber 9 x 39 mm SP.5 and SP.6. The ammunition used by the prototype has a caliber of 5.45 x 39 mm.
Strengths and weaknesses of the new cartridge
βTissβ was created specifically for military operations in urban environments. Often, police capture groups had to fire indoors. As a result, when detaining criminals, third parties became victims of ricochets.
The SP.5 and SP.6 used in this weapon, in comparison with the sharp-pointed ammunition AKS-74U, do not ricochet, while maintaining their high stopping power. This increases the accuracy of hits. Particularly accurate are the cartridges of SP.5, which are considered sniper. SP.6 is armor-piercing. From a distance of 400 meters, they can penetrate body armor, which has a second class of protection.
The disadvantages of SP.5 and SP.6 are:
- SP.5 has a low initial speed and a large mass, which is fraught with a reduction in effective firing range. The use of this ammunition is recommended at a distance not exceeding 200 meters.
- Cartridge SP.6 has a high cost. The idea to produce cheap versions of this ammunition under the designation PAB-9 (armor-piercing assault cartridges) was unsuccessful.
The police capture groups operating in each region, territory and republics under the leadership of the GUBOP of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation widely use the new small arms OTs-11 Tiss. Ammunition adapted to this unified model of the AKS-74U no longer gives ricochets and has excellent ballistic properties. This allows the fighters of law enforcement agencies to boldly use weapons against organized crime without risking the civilian population.
