Quite often, when posting text on a site, the author is faced with certain problems. This is the general design of the text, its appearance - paragraphs, font, color, formatting and special characters such as inextricable space, number, trademark and many others.
Typically, such problems arise with texts of scientific or advertising topics due to the use of specific characters. And if in text documents these characters can be easily inserted using the insert or a special
keyboard shortcut, then with an html document everything is not so simple.
So, how do you insert special characters in an html document. A non-breaking space can be set in two ways - using a mnemonic symbol or using a special code. The same applies to other special characters, such as ampersant, quotation marks, paragraph, number, more and less characters, and many others.
Mnemonic designations, as well as a digital code, must begin with an ampersand (&) and end with a semicolon. For example: non-breaking space - & nbsp ;.
Codes and mnemonic
symbols can be found in special tables. In addition to the “inextricable space”
mark, various
diacritical marks, accents, special characters used in linguistics, chemistry, physics and many other sciences, trademarks, emoticons and more are also included in the tables.
What is better to use when inserting an inextricable space in a document? There is no universal solution. On the one hand, not all special characters have a code designation, on the other hand, browsers do not always display the mnemonic code correctly.
It should also be noted that a digital code may not always be displayed correctly in a document. The reason is that it only determines the place of the character in the symbol table. Do not forget that new signs may appear in the table, the numbering may change. Therefore, it is most preferable to use precisely mnemonic designations, inserting special characters into the document.
But in what cases is it preferable to use an inextricable space? An html document is not always displayed the same way - the line width may vary depending on the browurez and the computer screen. Therefore, an inextricable space should be placed between the initials and surname used in the text, the sign of the number and the subsequent digit, before the dash, and in general in cases where line break is undesirable. The use of an inextricable space is also governed by typographic rules.
Using mnemonic symbols, it is worth remembering a few basic rules. Firstly, all characters should be written only with a small letter. Large letters in the markup are not allowed - they simply will not be displayed. Secondly, there should not be spaces between signs. Mnemonic characters, as well as codes are written together.
If the characters are not displayed correctly, you should check the spelling. Quite often, such problems arise if the markup was written in a hurry and errors and typos were made in the notation.
Remember, mindfulness is the key to the successful design of your text, especially in html format.
