For a long time, there was talk of building the Yuzhny airport. But only in 2011, finally, they announced its launch. And soon work began to recreate the project. For the construction of this facility was allocated a place in the Rostov region, located near the regional center.

Back in 1971, they started talking about moving the old airport outside the million-plus city, but the USSR MGA did not approve this project. And for a long 40 years he was hidden under the cloth. The old terminal, being caught in the ring by the city, had no chance to develop further. This was one of the significant reasons (along with the fact that in 2018 the World Cup will be held in the city) that the government nevertheless decided to erect an air gate under the name “Yuzhny”.
The construction of the Yuzhny airport began in 2014. Although this project was mentioned back in 2011, when the number of flights increased sharply, and the existing airport was no longer able to cope with them.
Construction site
It was decided to build the airport in the vicinity of Rostov-on-Don. This is the Aksaysky district, located next to the Don 4 highway, which runs from Moscow to the southern part of Russia. Here, north of the village of Grushevskaya, they determined the construction site of the Yuzhny airport. The construction of this facility takes place in stages. The first stage of work was the airport terminal, about 8 million passengers will pass through it. According to the project and plans, the complex will be equipped with 9 telescopic ramps, and its area will reach 50 thousand square meters. Here, near the Yuzhny airport, the construction of a cargo terminal with parking is provided. The terminal will be located on 5,200 square meters, and the parking will contain about 2,500 convenient parking spaces.

The scale of the international port is simply amazing in its scope. Yuzhny Airport is a construction that takes place under the auspices of high technology and grandiose responsibility. Hundreds of people and more than 200 modern machines work daily on the construction site of the century. It is planned that in the future, the Platov airport will provide jobs for several thousand people.
At the same time, architects need to develop capital in the amount of 25 billion rubles, where 1 billion is the budget money of the region. 10 billion - allocated by the federal budget, and 14 billion - private investments. Owner - holding "Airports of the Regions". The basis of their activities is the construction of new airports in the Russian Federation. They, in addition to the construction of the Platov air complex, are engaged in the implementation of a similar project in Saratov.
Provision of transport
Having looked at the map where the airport is being built, you can immediately understand that the airport transportation and passenger delivery will be excellent. The preparatory work project has been approved and road construction has begun. Its length will be about 20 kilometers, the asphalt road will consist of four lanes. This route will connect the airport with the northern bypass road of Rostov. The cost of building the track will cost the budget another 40 million rubles. The construction of the road is carried out by GiproDorNII OJSC.
Bridge to the sky and connection with other countries
In the summer of 2013, an international architectural competition was held for the construction project of the South Airport, in which 21 bureaus participated. But only 11 people were allowed to participate in the competition directly. The intermediate win of the tender for the work was taken by 4 bureaus. These were: Rostovites, Muscovites and the British.
Two reached the final, they scored the same number of points. This is Asadov’s bureau and the British. The English company Twelve Architects and their concept won in the end. Their idea is that the airport is not only the heavenly gates of a separate city. This is a bridge to the sky, which connects different countries and cities with each other.
Architecturally, it looks like a lot of large multilevel arches that are thrown from the forecourt to the airfield, in some places they flow into bridges that stretch across amazing ponds, and are located in front of the airport. At the suggestion of the architects, the space between the arches will be glazed to better illuminate the room with daylight and the most convenient observation of the landing and take-off through the windows and the roof of the terminal.
The opening ceremony of the Platov airport is scheduled for approximately December 2017. But since the construction is ahead of schedule, then perhaps this event will be postponed to an earlier date. Acceptance of the first flights is expected in early 2018. After 100% transfer of flights from the old airport to the new, the dismantling of the old airport terminal will begin.
