Surely everyone has a home photo archive, where there are old black and white (or rather, brown and white) pictures of great-grandmothers. This effect was very characteristic of photographs of those times, and they achieved it using sepia powder. This substance was made from the so-called ink bags of mollusks - squid and cuttlefish. These bags were dried, very finely ground, after which the resulting powder was boiled in an alkaline solution. Actually, the word “sepia” itself is translated from ancient Greek as “cuttlefish”.
Today, there is no longer any need to dry innocent mollusks to get paint, because modern technology makes it easy and simple to make a sepia effect in Photoshop. This is not difficult. All that is required of you is to carefully follow any of the instructions below.
The first way. First of all, select any photo for the experiment and open it in Photoshop. The picture can be both color and black and white. If you selected a color photo, transfer it to b / w as follows: in the top menu bar, click on “Image” (or Image if the editor is not Russified). In the drop-down menu, hover over the word “Correction” (or Ajustiments), and in the additional menu that appears, click on “Hue / Saturation” (or Hue / Saturation). In the window that appears, find the "Presets" (or Preset) tab and in it - the "Sepia" (or Sepia) setting. If you have Photoshop version CS3, then in this window you need to check the box next to the word "Toning", and then use the sliders to achieve the desired shade of sepia.

The next way that sepia is obtained in Photoshop is as follows: after opening the photo in this editor, go to the “Layers” (or Layer), and then follow the route “New adjustment layer” (or New adjustment layer). Here, in the "Photo Filter" option, select sepia and adjust the slider to achieve the desired effect. As you can see, working in Photoshop is not so difficult, but very interesting.
Here is another option: you need to go to “Image” (or Image), find “Correction” (or Ajustments) in the drop-down menu, where to choose “Black and White” (or Black & Wite). Opposite the “Tint” (Tint), check the box and adjust the sliders in the window until we get the desired result. After that, click OK and we can save the picture.
But this is not all the ways in which sepia is achieved in Photoshop. It is also possible: in the "Image" find the option "Correction", and in it - "Variations" (or Variations). Make sure you select “Halftones” (or Midtones) in the window that opens. Next, to get high-quality sepia in Photoshop, move the Thin / Coarse (or Fine / Coarse) slider to the left, literally one division or a little more. Once you need to click on “Yellow” (or Yellow) and “Red” (or Red) to add these colors to the midtones of the image opened in the editor.
As you can see, sepia in Photoshop is very easy and simple. Now you can give the effect of antiquity to any picture. Also, you can make the resulting photo more or less contrasting, give it brightness or reduce it. This is achieved in the following way: in the "Image" we click on "Brightness / Contrast", and then, using the sliders, we achieve optimal effects. When you are satisfied with the result, click “Yes”, and then save the photo under a new name (so as not to erase the color original).
