Let's say that we need to determine how much the bank deposit will grow in five years, calculate the tax on the sale of goods or find out how much it costs to take a loan. In any of these cases, you have to deal with interest. A calculator is a good thing, but it cannot give visibility and recalculate the result when changing the source data, just as Excel easily does. In addition, the calculations can always be saved in a file (it is clear that the calculator does not have such functionality).
When interest is calculated in Excel, the calculation formula is selected depending on what data is known and what exactly needs to be determined. As you know from school, the basic formula can be written as follows: percent = value / total result.
Calculation of the percentage of the total
For example, if you win 5,000 rubles in the state lottery, you need to pay 15% of income tax. How much will you need to give to the state?
| A | IN | FROM | D |
1 | Win amount | Decimal tax value | Formula | Description |
2 | 5000 | 0.15 | = A2 * B2 | The number 5000 is simply multiplied by 0.15 to get the amount of tax that needs to be paid (750). |
Calculation of percentages with a known value and the total result
For example, if 29 students are studying in a class, of which 16 are boys, then what is the percentage of boys?
| A | IN | FROM | D |
1 | Number of boys | Total number of students | Percentage calculation, formula | Description |
2 | 16 | 29th | = A2 / B2 | The ratio of 16 to 29 will determine the percentage of boys (approximately 0.5517 or 55.17%). |
If you use the Percentage button (Main tab, Number group), you can present the total in percentage terms.
Calculation of the total using value and percentage
For example, in a store jeans cost 2,390 rubles. This week is a 23% discount on February 23rd. How much will jeans cost next week?
| A | IN | FROM | D |
1 | Selling price | 100% -23% (decimal) | Formula | Description |
2 | 2390 | 0.77 | = A2 / B2 | 2390 is divided by 0.77 in order to find out the initial cost (3103.90 rubles). |
Calculation of percent in the form of a difference of two numbers
For example, the salary in February amounted to 24,780 rubles, and in March - 25,500 rubles. What is the percentage increase for the period? To solve this example, you need to use the ABC function in addition to the main division and subtraction operators.
| A | IN | FROM | D |
1 | February salary | March Salary | Percentage calculation, formula | Description |
2 | 24780 | 25500 | = (B2-A2) / ABS (A2) | The division of the difference must be performed on the first-number module, and therefore the ABC function is needed. As a result, we obtain 0.02905 (or 2.91%). |
Note The ABC function is designed to determine the absolute value of a number. In other words, it returns a module, i.e. an unsigned number.
Decrease or increase the number by the specified percentage
| A | IN |
1 | Number | Number of percent |
2 | 97.96 | 1,521% |
3 | Formula | Description |
4 | = A2 * (1-B2) | The number 97.96 decreases by 1.521% (96.47). |
5 | = A2 * (1 + B2) | The number 97.96 increases by 1.521% (99.45). |
For example, the rate of ordinary securities of Sberbank over the past week increased by 1.521% and amounted to 97.96 rubles per share. What was the initial value of the securities? Or, conversely, it is expected that Sberbank securities will grow in a couple of days (at least 2%). What will be their final cost? For your convenience, you can copy the contents of the following plate into a new Excel sheet. If you see an error instead of the results, try replacing the commas in numbers with periods.
As you probably already could see, calculating percentages in Excel is a very simple and convenient thing. No wonder that accountants, bankers, financiers and just all those who often have to work with numbers love this program so much.
