If a microphone is connected to your personal computer or laptop, then you can make a full-fledged device for sound recording from it. You can use the recorder on your computer in many ways, which we will talk about below.
Possible options
Recording sound from a microphone into an audio format is easy. The following methods are used for this:
- standard Windows program;
- third-party software;
- online services for recording.

Standard recorder on a computer
The simplest and most affordable option, in which you do not have to download additional utilities or open websites, is a standard program in the Windows operating system. You can use it as follows:
- Open the search box and enter the query “Sound Recorder”. You can also find this utility in the Start menu.
- The second option to run the application on Windows 7 and earlier operating systems is the Run window. Run it using the Win + R command and enter the line soundrecorder.
- The application is a small window with a minimum of buttons. To start the process, click on "Start recording".
- If your microphone is working properly and does not conflict with the system, then you will see frequency changes. To complete, click on the "Stop Recording" button.
This recorder on your computer allows you to record audio files in mp3 format and saves them in the default folder with documents. In Windows 10, the Sound Recorder program has been replaced with an application from the Microsoft Store called Voice Recording. The essence of the utility remains the same.
Third party programs
There is a lot of similar software, therefore it will not work to transfer all the funds. We select one voice recorder program on a computer called Audacity. It is completely free and boasts an intuitive interface without extra functions and buttons. You can download it on the official website of the developers. After installation, run the program and do the following:
- In the upper panel, click on the sound icon in the form of a red circle.
- Dictate the necessary text.
- Click on the “Stop” button.
The functionality of this program allows you to convert audio to several popular formats, adjust the frequencies during and after recording, edit the track.
Online service
Now, to record audio, it is not necessary to install the recorder on a computer - just connect a microphone and open the necessary site. Open it in any browser and click the Record button. After that, click "Save" and select the folder on your hard drive for the mp3 file.
