Disadvantages and advantages

Previously, all KAMAZ vehicles were produced in a cabless version when the cab is located directly above the engine. From the point of view of the layout, this scheme is impeccable, but if you consider the car according to other criteria, you can note a number of disadvantages. First of all, the balance of the chassis and the high center of gravity leave much to be desired. However, these conditional flaws are not considered an occasion for reworking the car, which has been produced at the largest, well-equipped Kama automobile plant for many years .

Not so long ago, a hood KamAZ was developed, this was done as part of the development of the main project. The specialists of the Kama enterprise took an example from the β€œMazovites” who developed the hood modification in Minsk. New cars have already established themselves as reliable tractors and dump trucks with a low center of gravity, stable under all road conditions.

To create such a modification as the bonnet KamAZ, the desire of the Kama plant team to get new modern sports cars for the Paris-Dakar rally and other similar competitions served as an impetus.

First of all, the constant and uncompromising rivalry of the KamAZ-master and the Iveco team, whose leader is Gerard de Rooy, played its role. Since Iveco trucks have a bonnet layout, they automatically get a number of advantages. Stability at a distance, maneuverability, throttle response and other factors provide the Dutch-Polish team with a good chance of winning.

The created bonnet rally KamAZ does not look like something special, but the parameters of a fundamentally new design allow us to hope for good results. However, it’s too early to talk about this, it will take some time, the car will take part in a number of competitions, after which it will be possible to draw conclusions. In the meantime, the first sports KamAZ hood layout is being tested.

Design

The development of the modification was limited by a number of technical conditions, which are dictated by the format and regulations of the Dakar rally. In other words, the creators of the new truck had no scope for action. In addition, the whole matter was complicated by the absence of bonnet-type cabs at the Kama plant, which were never there. Production did not need them. Creating cabins of a new type would be too expensive, and the Directorate could not invest heavily in production that was still undeveloped. Therefore, an alternative decision was made - to order several cabins in Germany.

The bonnet KAMAZ for Dakar was designed on the basis of the 4326 model, almost the entire chassis was used without changes, it was only necessary to increase the wheelbase. However, the search for rational solutions did not end there. A new engine was also required, as the previous Liebherr brand motor did not have the required characteristics. To solve the issue of the power plant helped Czech colleagues from the company Buggyra. Experts recommended using one of the Caterpillar brand motor models, which in almost all respects corresponded to the tasks.

Frame problems

The next pressing issue when creating a KamAZ racing was the linking of the chassis with the location of the engine. The motor was too high and could affect the overall balance. This issue was decided to be postponed until the completion of work on the distribution of the weight of all units and assemblies on the frame structure. In addition, with an increase in the center distance of the chassis, and it increased significantly, it was necessary to strengthen the longitudinal beams of the frame. Racing in the desert is dangerous due to the twisting effect when the front and rear wheels are in different planes. At such moments, opposite loads act on the elongated rectangle of the frame, which can break the channel structure.

Heat exchangers

The bonnet KAMAZ, among other things, presented the developers with another surprise. These are two heat exchangers associated with a turbocharged air on a diesel engine. In the previous version, these devices were placed on the sides of the engine compartment at a sufficient distance from each other, since this is required by the technology of their use. Bonnet KAMAZ does not have the motor space of the required width, and there is nowhere to place heat exchangers. And if they are installed at a close distance from each other, breakdowns along the way are possible.

There are no bonnet KamAZs in the free sale, since the KamAZ-master team has the exclusive right to own sports modifications and no purchase and sale are planned at this stage. The bonnet KAMAZ, the price of which has already been determined by the calculation and economic method, can be conditionally sold for about five million rubles. However, a truck that cannot be used under normal conditions is unlikely to be needed by anyone. Thus, the racing KamAZ, the price of which is expressed by a seven-digit figure, cannot be bought or sold at the present time.
