Firefox Basic Setup: Features

Now, during the time of the ubiquitous Internet, every computer owner can literally download any available browser, a program for working with global network resources, in just a few clicks of the mouse button.

Although every similar software product has a whole army of fans, you can distinguish Firefox from the Mozilla community. Among others, this browser is distinguished by the absence of tracking modules (which made Chrome especially famous for its "Google") and humane requirements for computing resources. In order for the program to be convenient, Firefox must be configured. This will allow you to adjust the browser specifically for your requirements.

Two possibilities

Configuring Firefox can be done in two ways: using standard tools available to each user, as well as by making direct changes to the configuration file. Although the second method (hidden Firefox settings) is more universal, since it allows you to get full control over the configuration of the program, beginners should use it with caution. Thoughtless changes can lead to the opposite effect - slowdowns, crashes, etc. To start, you need to type about: config in the address bar. But setting up Firefox with regular tools is completely safe: it is impossible to seriously disrupt the program, and a relatively small number of items makes it easy to restore the previous state of the browser.

Basic Firefox Setup

We have already pointed out that each user should configure the program “for himself”, therefore blindly follow the recommendations given is not necessary. So, the setup begins by launching the application and clicking on the orange (in the Stable and Beta versions) Firefox button located in the upper left corner of the program window. Next in the list you need to find “Settings” and proceed to the tab of the same name. The “Launch” block allows you to specify the page that will be displayed when the browser is turned on. When installing the Speed Dial extension, the corresponding home page will usually be inserted automatically. Do not ignore the ability to specify the folder for downloading files: this eliminates the need to search the necessary path every time with Explorer. For some users, this may be the desktop, while others may have a special folder on the disk. In the “Content” tab, you need to activate the pop-up blocker: this will save nerve cells when visiting some sites. Here, opposite the “Font and Colors”, click “Advanced” and set Unicode (UTF-8) in encodings.

The "Privacy" tab contains the ability to include in the data packets sent by the browser a special combination of characters that informs the visited site that the user does not want (or vice versa) to create a log file with his actions. At the same time, Internet resources are not required to follow this requirement. At least for now. But if you prohibit saving in the "History" block, then all information about the session (visited pages, data and cookies typed in the forms) will be deleted after the application is closed. In fact, this is an analogue of the private mode. Useful when working with someone else's computer. The items on the Protection tab are designed to secure the user on the Web. You should not disable them (except for the "Master Password", this is optional). The “Advanced” tab makes it possible to make the browser the main one (“System - By default”). In the “Browse sites” block, all checkboxes must be checked: this makes working with sites more convenient. The “Data Selection” item is intended to support developers: in the event of a failure, data is transferred to the Firefox server, where it is analyzed, and measures are taken to eliminate errors in future versions. With the “Updates” tab, special questions usually do not arise: failure, manual and automatic modes. But in “Network - Settings” you can specify ports and addresses when working through a proxy server (local or network).

Recovery

Sometimes you need to save your Firefox settings. For example, when reinstalling the system. This is very easy to do with MozBackup. After starting, you need to select Firefox from the list, specify the backup mode and where to save the profile. When restoring, select restore.
