Causes of eye redness, treatment and prevention

Many of us periodically encounter a problem when the eye turns red, and the problem is not only and not so much cosmetic in nature. The degree of redness does not indicate the severity of the disease. The most formidable symptoms are still pain in the eye, as well as a noticeable visual impairment.

The most common causes of eye redness :

  • The expansion of the blood vessels of the eye can be caused by fatigue and visual strain, an allergic reaction of the body, eye irritation by a foreign body, eye injury;
  • Inflammatory processes can cause infection and, as a result, redness of the eye:

ü Blepharitis - inflammation of the bacterial origin of ciliary follicles. It is mainly accompanied by the formation of crusts on the eyelids and severe itching;

ü conjunctivitis, or “pink eye” - bacterial, allergic or viral inflammation of the membrane covering the front of the eye and eyelids;

ü Corneal ulcer. Most often it has a bacterial nature;

ü Uveitis - inflammation of the choroid. May accompany toxic lesions, autoimmune diseases, infections.

Other causes of redness of the eyes are the inappropriate use of contact lenses in violation of the basic recommendations of the optometrist, an attack of glaucoma, an overdose of medications that reduce blood coagulation.

Depending on the cause of redness in the eyes, the following methods are shown to resolve this problem:

- with fatigue and stress, it is enough just to have a good rest and sleep;

- with conjunctivitis, rinse your eyes with chamomile infusion (several times during the day). You can also use special pharmacy eye drops. Until complete recovery, it is better not to wear contact lenses and do not use eye makeup. You should always remember the cleanliness of the hands, especially if necessary, touch the eye;

- blepharitis shows warm compresses with calendula or chamomile twice a day for five minutes. Before and after sleep, it is necessary to clean the edges of the eyelids with a clean cotton swab dipped in warm boiled water;

- with the syndrome of "dry eye", accompanied by redness and caused by the wearing of contact lenses or long work at the computer, you can use eye drops from redness and dryness that mimic a natural tear.

However, with an unidentified disease, it is better not to engage in self-medication, especially if, along with redness, there is a clear visual impairment, eye and headache, vomiting, nausea. Urgent medical attention is also required if redness of the eye was caused by trauma or exposure to foreign bodies. In the case of the use of drugs that reduce blood coagulation, and changes in light perception, along with redness of the eyes, you should also contact an optometrist as soon as possible.

Knowing the causes of redness of the eye, one can and should try to prevent, as far as possible, such consequences:

  • When working at the computer, you need to take a break for 15-20 minutes every hour, and when you get to work, often blink;
  • Remember special exercises for the eyes and do them regularly;
  • Strictly observe eye hygiene and teach this to children, since it is precisely non-compliance with hygiene rules that most often provokes inflammatory eye diseases ;
  • Use safety glasses at the slightest risk of getting into the eyes of all kinds of foreign bodies;
  • Strictly follow all the recommendations of the optometrist on the use of contact lenses;
  • Use only high-quality cosmetics and be sure to wash off your makeup at night;
  • Strengthen the immune system, so that the body can overcome bacteria and viruses, because these are the most common causes of eye redness;
  • Fully relax and get enough sleep.

Eyes that are properly looked after, cared for and taken care of, will always be beautiful and radiant. Only healthy eyes can allow us to enjoy all the colors of this wonderful world.
