A biased attitude is, first of all, the perception and evaluation of another person or event without a desire for objectivity. Of course, everyone has the right to a personal opinion, and how to form it (by what criteria). But when an individual is not just in a social environment, but performs specific official duties, holding a certain position, there is no place for a biased attitude towards his colleagues, his boss, or the subject of his work. Otherwise, labor efficiency decreases, because one of the features of professionalism is an adequate attitude to one’s work and colleagues.
Bias: meaning
The explanatory dictionary of the Russian language by Kuznetsov defines bias as an opinion that has developed in advance, without taking into account objective facts. Given the modern use of this term, we can say that the dictionary gives an incomplete meaning. Now, a biased attitude is understood to mean that which developed on a personal hostility to a person: it can be due to psychological incompatibility or known facts about this person. At the same time, the information that causes a biased attitude does not apply in any way to the subject of the work.
Prejudice as an obstacle to career growth
Nowadays, one may often encounter a biased attitude at work. The human factor has always been of great importance in any work activity, and, for example, many features differ in such features as psychological ability to interact, value system, as well as criteria for evaluating people around. Hence, precedents of bias may arise. As a result, the staff of the enterprise plunges into intrigues, which occupy a significant part of the time, which would be better spent on the performance of official duties. There are also frequent cases when representatives of certain professions are biased towards the very subject of their activity, and this destroys the development of mastery at the root.
Prejudice in professions
In journalism there is such a thing as an objective presentation of material. Coverage of events and facts requires objectivity and impartiality - this is one of the basic principles of journalism, non-observance of which discredits the profession. Today, we can observe how correspondents make a “one-sided” presentation of materials, and this undermines public confidence in the media.
If the psychologist is biased towards his patients, then he will not be able to help them. This "model" of bias can be "tried on" for any profession, and then it turns out that in any case it leads to negative consequences: undermining authority, poor-quality production, etc.
Biased attitude
When the boss is biased towards one of the employees, this poisones the life of the latter. The boss has enough authority to “survive” a colleague who is not liked: to send to difficult tasks without support, substitute for senior management, lower salaries, present more stringent regime requirements, etc. These cases can have serious consequences, including dismissal.
There are three ways to solve this problem. If the work is not very valuable, then it is better to find another one and get away from the unfriendly boss: this can save time and nerves, because you should not expect an increase in such work. If you need to keep the position, then you can contact the higher authorities or solve the problem yourself. The latter option is one of the most difficult, because in this case you need to find out yourself why the boss is embittered, and depending on this, compensate for the reason for his bias. If the subordinate does not fit the leader because of personal hostility, then it is difficult to fix anything.
Prejudice
If a subordinate is biased towards his leader, then this, of course, negatively affects his work. Lack of mutual understanding and unwillingness to interact with him leads to the fact that the work is not performed with the efficiency with which it could in a normal relationship. The employee must review their assessments and separate personal from professional. If the problem is the manager’s lack of professionalism (for example, a subordinate considers himself more competent and finds it unfair that he is under the leadership of a mediocre boss), then he must either overcome his acute sense of injustice or leave this position.
Bias has become a big obstacle in reaching the career heights of many people, so it is best to avoid such cooperation in which individuals are biased towards each other.
