A few years ago, the Turkish television series Magnificent Century (Muhteşem Yüzyıl) appeared. It described the period of rule by the Ottoman Empire, the most revered by the Turkish people Sultan Suleiman. For four seasons, viewers managed to learn and love many characters. Among them is the sister of the great Suleiman - Fatma Sultan. Most viewers would be interested to know what the fate of this bright and outstanding woman really was.
The origin of the Sultana
Fatma Sultan was the half-sister of the tenth Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, Suleiman. Her father was the ninth Sultan Selim I, and her mother was the daughter of the Crimean Khan Mengli Girey Aisha Hafs.
In addition to Suleiman, Fatma had three more brothers: Orhan, Musa and Korkut (they died in childhood) and four sisters: Hatice, Shah, Beihan and Hafsa.
Fatma Sultan: biography
According to official sources, the sultana was born in 1500. When the girl grew up, she was traditionally married to one of the officials of the Ottoman Empire. The husband of the sultana was the ruler of the sanjak Antakya Mustafa Pasha. Because of this, Fatma Sultan stayed outside Istanbul for a long time.
What happened to the first husband of this sultana is not exactly known. The most likely version is that he was executed. However, the possibility of a divorce should not be ruled out, as women of the Sultanian family in the Ottoman Empire could, at their own request, break up with her husband. True, this divorce became valid only with the consent of the Sultan.
The second husband of the beautiful sultana was the great vizier Kara Ahmed Pasha. He was subsequently executed by Suleiman. It is believed that the culprit of the death of the second husband of Fatma Sultan was the husband of Suleiman's daughter, Mihrimah Rustem Pasha. The fact is that he previously held the position of Grand Vizier, but was removed from it. To return, Rustem slandered Kara Ahmed Pasha and after his execution he again became the great vizier.
When Fatma Sultan lost her second husband, she was already fifty-five years old. She never married again. There is no information whether this sultana had children.
In 1570, the great sultana died and was buried next to her second husband. Five years later, in memory of her, a mosque was built, which exists today.
Fatma Sultan was a bold and beautiful woman. Unfortunately, not so much information was preserved about her as about her sisters, because, despite high-ranking husbands, the sultana did not go into politics. Moreover, she was respected not only by the people, but also by the Janissaries, which, except for her, only Kesem Sultan, who lived later, could achieve.
A reliable portrait of this woman was not preserved, however, according to the recollections of eyewitnesses, she was very beautiful. And with the release of the television series "The Magnificent Century" for millions, Fatty Sultan became the actress Meltem Dzhumbul.
Fatma Sultan character in the series
In the television series "The Magnificent Century," Sultana Fatma appears only in the fourth season. Unlike her sisters, she is presented as a beautiful, cheerful woman who brings celebration with herself.
In the series Fatma Sultan (photo below) is shown as a rather amorous woman.
It is mentioned that at first she passionately loved her first husband. However, having fallen in love with another man, she cheated on her husband. The couple did not report to Suleiman about this incident and quietly divorced. But later, Fatma's husband tried to marry her again, so she poisoned him on the eve of the wedding.
Trying to quarrel her niece Mihrimah with her husband Rustem, Sultana Fatma herself falls in love with the young man with whom she tried to make the girl. At the end of the campaign, they were supposed to get married, but this did not happen.
Having burnt for a short time, Sultana Fatma became the wife of the great vizier Kara Ahmed Pasha. The series shows that he fully supported the interests of his wife and loved her very much. The sultana herself also reciprocated his feelings. After the death of her husband, Fatma tried to take revenge on the wife of Suleiman Roksolana, who, together with her son-in-law Rustem, plagued her husband. However, having failed, she was expelled forever from the capital.
