The first planes began to arrive at Naryan-Mar airport in 1933. The construction of a land airport began in 1940. It was carried out by popular forces, on Saturdays and Sundays. It was planned that funds for construction would be allocated from the state in the forty-first year, but there were constant delays, which greatly complicated the work. When the war began, it was the construction of the airdrome that became the priority.
As a result, the airport began to work actively at the end of the year and was annexed to the 772nd Belomorflot air base. Airplanes from Naryan-Mar conducted reconnaissance over the Arctic. The length of the runway is 900 meters, it was at a distance of 1200 m from the House of Soviets. In the forty-third year, the construction of the airfield was continued.
The work was moving very fast. Soon drainage ditches were laid, the airfield was drained. Wetlands showered with sand and had wooden fencing. A command post and a ground shelter for aircraft were built. In 1950, four lodges for air services appeared at the airport.
Two years later, a flood occurred, after which the authorities had to additionally build a hotel, an 8-apartment building and a transportation department. Shelter was created to repair aircraft and other equipment. The first aircraft to land at the airport was the AN-2. In 1955, the Naryan-Mar airport acquired a radar, thanks to which the audibility of aircraft was increased to 60 kilometers. In 1956, the AN squad replenished with the AN-2V.
At the airport, a wooden pier was built on the lake. A modern airfield appeared at the request of the Ministry of Defense only in the late 1960s. At first, the runways were covered with steel American stripes, then they were replaced by Soviet PAG-14.
Since 1981, the Naryan-Mar airport (the arrival board, respectively, is available) began to be used for passenger traffic. In 1981, an air terminal adapted for auxiliary services was given up. In the summer of ninety-third, a new building opened.
