Men’s birthday on October 9: Apostle John the Theologian
Among all the disciples of the Savior, John the Theologian was distinguished by special Christian love and virgin purity. He relentlessly followed Jesus Christ everywhere, was present when the Lord performed miraculous healings, was nearby at interrogations and followed the Master along the Way of the Cross. John the Theologian was one of the three disciples of Christ, whom he especially brought closer to himself.
After the crucifixion of the Savior, the apostle tried to replace the Mother of God of his son and was with her until her assumption. Later, John the Evangelist went from Jerusalem to Ephesus, intending to preach the Christian faith there.
On the way, the ship with its students sank into the sea. All of them were able to get out of the abyss, and only no one found the apostle or his body on the shore. Fourteen days later, the student of John Prokhor found his teacher ashore unharmed. The Lord saved his life by not allowing him to drown in the sea abyss.
At Ephesus, the Theologian was persecuted, arrested, and sentenced to death. But the Lord always protected him. The apostle drank a cup of poison and remained alive, he was thrown into a cauldron with boiling oil - and he came out unscathed. After this, John was exiled to the island of Patmos. For many years he lived here, continuing to preach and perform miraculous healings.
On the island, John the Evangelist wrote the Book of Revelations, or Apocalypse, returning to Ephesus, the Gospel, at the 95th year of his life. In all his epistles, the apostle urged Christians to love one another and to obey God's commandments.
The old man died, having outlived all other witnesses of the Savior's life. When he was more than a hundred years old, the apostle told his disciples to dig a grave in the form of a cross, lay down in it and ordered to fill it with earth. Later, when other students unearthed the burial site, it turned out that the body was not there. However, every year on this place on May 8 a little dust of the apostle appeared, with which all the sick were healed. On this day and October 9, men named after Ivan celebrate name day. Patriarch All-Russian Saint Tikhon
Tikhon (Vasily Ivanovich Belavin) was born in the Pskov province in 1865 in the family of a priest. Since childhood, he was hardworking and humble, worked not only on the ground, but also regularly served in the church. At 13, he entered the Theological Seminary in the city of Pskov. After that, the young man studied at the Theological Academy in St. Petersburg.
Tikhon completely surrendered to the service of the Lord and the Orthodox Church. At 25, he was tonsured a monk. At 33, he became rector of the Theological Seminary in the city of Holm and was elevated to the rank of bishop. At age 40, Tikhon became archbishop. In this title, he led the Russian Orthodox Church in America for nine years.
From 1917 to 1925, Tikhon was the All-Russian Patriarch. In this rank, on April 7 of the same year, he ended his earthly life.

Rev. Ephraim of Perekomsky
He was born in 1420 in Kashin of the Tver province in a family of poor believers. Parents even before his birth decided that they would give their son to serve the Lord. Ephraim (worldly name Eustathius) himself learned to read and write from the books of God and from an early age served in the church. Upon learning that they want to marry him, the young man asked his parents for help at the Kalyazinsky monastery and remained in it as a novice.
Three years later, Eustathius moved to the monastery of Sava Vishersky. Here he took the tonsure of a monk named Ephraim. He served the church well; he labored over human strength. A few years later, Ephraim went to the desert, where he set up a cell and closed himself from everyone in it, while in constant prayer. Gradually, other monks joined him.
In Novgorod, Ephraim took over the priesthood and, returning to his former dwelling place, founded a temple there in honor of the Epiphany of the Lord. Later, another church was erected nearby in the name of Nicholas the Wonderworker. Here, after his death on September 26 (on October 9, the name day is celebrated in a new style) and the saint was buried. On this day, the Orthodox Church honors his name.
