Story
The Philharmonic of Barnaul is housed in a building that was originally the People’s House. It was built in the period from 1898 to 1900. The initiator of the project was a public figure V.K.Shtilke. Assistance was provided by V.K. Boldyrev, Head of the Altai District. At the request of the latter, I. N. Ropet, a well-known Petersburg architect, created a project in the "pseudo-Russian style" for free.
Architecture
As we have already said, the Barnaul Philharmonic is housed in the People’s House. During its construction, the foundation previously owned by the former prison was used. In terms of geometric dimensions, the renovated building was much larger. Due to lack of funds, the idea of the architect Ivan Ropet was not fully implemented.
The facade is made in the Russian style, decorated with small twisted columns, kokoshniks, platbands, “wicker”. There are also complex shaped traction and other motives borrowed in the architecture of Russia of the seventeenth century. Construction was carried out with deviations from the original design, without field supervision.
The construction is made of special red brick from the strict development of Peter and Paul Street, which was filled with the spirit of classicism. In the Soviet period, the Barnaul Philharmonic Society partially lost the original appearance of the facade. The building is currently fully renovated. In 2007, a team of architects was involved in the development and reconstruction of the building.
For this work, the team was awarded a prize in the framework of the Golden Capital festival. A new acoustic solution during the reconstruction of the Great Hall was developed by P.N. Kravchun, V.N. Sukhov and M. Yu. Lane. They paid special attention to improving the sound of the organ. The first floor is designed in special red and pink colors. Stairs and marble flooring.
Gray, blue and plum blue hues dominate the concert hall. In the foyer of the third and second floors - white and beige colors. The visitor will also be greeted by oak flooring and small leather white sofas.
The walls are decorated with gypsum stucco. In the concert hall, as well as between the flights of stairs of the third and second floors, huge crystal chandeliers are placed. You can also find caissons here. They are located in the concert hall on the ceiling and contribute to the improvement of acoustics.

Interesting Facts
The building for the future Philharmonic of Barnaul was built on donations from citizens. The Social Democrats used New Year balls, which were held at the People’s House in 1905 and 1906, to criticize the local authorities and the tsarist regime. On December 29, at such an event, a man appeared who portrayed the “free Russian press”. His clothes were then covered with newspaper clippings. On his head was the inscription “Royal mercies”. Also on the suit were gallows, whips and bayonets.
