Resource of the car engine as the main indicator of quality

When buying a new car, many motorists pay much more attention to the engine resource than to its other parameters, even if commercials for each individual model are based on them. While the manufacturer boasts the maximum speed of its brainchild, reassures with a low level of toxicity and lures with attractive economy, a critically thinking buyer is looking for the cherished figure in the technical documentation that defines the guaranteed performance, within which, subject to the basic requirements for operating conditions, the declared performance of the machine will remain.

As the most expensive unit (both in terms of manufacturing, and in terms of repair), the motor makes you pay special attention. It is not surprising that the engine resource is so important in assessing the potential of the car. Approximate, but quite visual is the determination of the quality of its manufacture with guaranteed mileage or a period of work until major repairs. It should be noted that under the overhaul understand the type of maintenance, involving the dismantling of the crankshaft.

The design of domestic small cars from the Volga automakers required to declare a resource for the very first family of 125 thousand km, by the start of the "tenth" generation this figure had already increased to 150 thousand km. Being a rather vague criterion, a resource defined in this way has high visibility and ease of perception.

At the expiration of these terms, the car may continue to work with the previous indicators of power, fuel and oil consumption, and there may be a change in these parameters or even a loss of performance. This once again proves that the engine resource indicator is very conditional.

The determination of the engine resource by mileage is a conditional indicator. In fact, the working condition of the heart of the power unit is greatly affected by the operating conditions. Not for nothing that for research purposes, VAZ engineers back in Soviet times exchanged a certain batch of engines with outrageous mileage indicators from a wide variety of geographical areas among the population. These studies showed that the most important condition for the long life of the motor is the quality of its manufacture (depends on the manufacturer) and compliance with the rules of its operation (rests with the user).

Every year, the domestic automaker represented by the Togliatti automakers is closer and closer in terms of the quality of its products to European standards. As for engines, each unit undergoes mandatory testing right up to break-in, which allows less attention to be paid to this procedure than it was on the first samples of the VAZ family.

The manufacturer guarantees that the resource of the engine installed on modern cars is a reasonable figure. Hot run-in is carried out on each motor. For the "classic" options, this procedure was given 15 minutes, front-wheel drive units pass it for 6.5 minutes. In addition, a twenty-hour test run-in of the engine at maximum revolutions periodically occurs (6000). After that, the test sample is completely sorted out and its reliability is assessed visually.

After passing all the tests, the new car practically does not require break-in, although this procedure is described in detail in the operating instructions. Obviously, this is also an additional reinsurance, and even after the overhaul of the motor, the steam lapping procedure is no longer necessary.

Considering the durability of engines, it should be borne in mind that the resource of a diesel engine to maintain it at a sufficiently high level requires the use of parts that are more durable than for gasoline counterparts. No matter how attractive the design of the motor, using a trihedral rotor piston in the form of a triangle of Relo, until he found wide application. The fact is that the resource of a rotary engine is much lower than that of its relatives from the ICE category.
