Engine braking: how to stop the car in case of emergency

Often, braking with a sharp pressure on the brake pedal becomes not only ineffective, but also quite dangerous. This is especially true when ice appears on the road. When braking in such conditions, the brake pads block the wheels and the machine continues to slide. In this situation, it is very simple to lose control of the car, so engine braking is the best solution to reduce speed.

What is this process, and which car components are involved? Typically, with a quiet ride, the engine holds approximately the same number of revolutions. At the beginning of the trip, the speed increases rapidly, and as the speed increases, it becomes more difficult for the engine to gain them. He has to counteract various forces that are trying to increase speed, while it can be said that engine braking is occurring.

The gearbox operation scheme in this situation is quite simple. It allows you to adjust the operation of the engine and, accordingly, the speed of movement itself. Since in high gears the engine transfers more power to the wheels, thus increasing their speed, its increase is practically not felt. In low gears, everything happens for the engine much easier, and the increase in speed is especially noticeable for the person in the car. Therefore, engine braking at low speeds is a fairly effective way to reduce vehicle speed.

However, you should be very careful when performing this action, since there is a risk of failure of some units of the car, starting from the suspension and ending with the engine.

It is very simple to brake the engine, however, in order to master this technique, you need to practice.

Firstly, when driving, it is necessary to engage third gear so that the engine begins to slow down faster. To do this, sharply increase the speed by pressing the gas pedal and then release it also quickly. Then the gearshift is performed in two ways: sharp and smooth. The second method can only be used by an experienced driver, because to complete the switch you will need to use almost all the limbs. To do this, the legs should be located simultaneously on the clutch and gas pedals, performing shift engagement of the clutch and relocation.

With a successful maneuver, the front of the car will have more weight due to inertia. Thanks to this, the car becomes more stable and less prone to drifts. Thus, carrying out engine braking, it is possible to increase the safety of passengers and the driver, in contrast to the case of the usual brake pads.

This technique should be used with caution for inexperienced drivers, as the risk of breakage increases. Only by performing confident braking (reverse) of the asynchronous motor on smooth and dry roads, you can start training, for example, on the slopes.

If the brakes are lost, it is necessary to reduce the speed of the car using the engine. To do this, it is enough just to remove your foot from the gas, without turning off the gear. Thus, engine braking is used. If the car is at high speed, it must be reduced by shifting in a downward gear - from high to low. However, you should not switch from the fourth speed immediately to the first. As a result of such actions, it becomes highly likely that the car will drift. It is necessary to lower the speed gradually, and having brought it to a minimum, it is necessary to apply the parking brake.

Having learned how to perform engine braking, you can make the movement safer - both in icy conditions and on steep mountain slopes.
