Androgens in women: the effect on the body of an increased amount

As you know, about seventy percent of cases of infertility in women is the result of an increased amount of androgens in the body of the fair sex. What are androgens, and why do they play such an important role in the life of not only women, but also men?

In general, androgens are steroid hormones that are produced by the sex glands. Androgens in women are produced by the ovaries, and in men by the testes. These hormones in the human body play a very important role. So, they, for example, have a strong anabolic as well as anti-catabolic effect. In addition, they significantly increase the synthesis of proteins produced by the body, and somewhat inhibit the breakdown of these backs. Androgens improve the glucose utilization process carried out by the cells of the body, thereby lowering its level in the blood. Androgens in women, and in men, contribute to muscle building and increase physical strength. That is why an excess of androgens in women leads to a suppression of the formation of female sex hormones, which leads to a lot of unpleasant consequences.

If a woman has elevated androgens, then her inhibition of egg maturation in the ovaries begins, and the growth of the uterine mucosa slows down. All these unpleasant syndromes sooner or later lead to the disruption of the menstrual cycle, which further leads to infertility. But the excess of androgens in women is also manifested externally. They have male body hair, or hirsutism. Elevated androgens in women, as a rule, are manifested in androgen-dependent areas of the skin. So, abundant hair growth is observed in the lower abdomen, on the chest, on the hips, and also on the face - under the lip, on the cheeks and on the chin. In women, beard and mustache trivially begin to grow. In addition, inflammation of the sebaceous glands and hair follicles can be observed. Acne appears on the back and face.

But modern medicine is able to deal with this disaster. Today, in the event that a woman has increased androgens, surgical or hormonal treatment can be successfully performed. And in order to determine what is the level of androgens in the body, hormonal, ultrasound and endoscopic studies are performed.

But do not think that hirsutism is a sign of an increased level of androgens in the female body. So, for example, it is known that women living in the Caucasus or the Mediterranean have a greater number of hair follicles than women in China, Japan or Mongolia. But at the same time their level of androgens is completely normal. According to experts, this state of affairs is determined genetically. And in this case, increased hair growth is called constitutional, or idiopathic.

It must be emphasized separately that increased androgens in women who are pregnant can lead to a very dangerous disease called hyperandrogenism. As a result of this disease, in the first place, a violation of the endocrine system of a woman occurs. And this can lead to miscarriage or miscarriage. As a rule, the risk of miscarriage is especially great in the first trimester of pregnancy. But it must be emphasized that this disease in pregnant women can be detected in the first months of pregnancy. The main thing is to register on time and follow all the doctor’s instructions.

You need to know that the lack of androgens in men also has a dramatic negative effect on health. Typically, such a recession begins after fifty years. As a result of it, men show a decrease in sexual activity, sometimes depression is observed. Thus, it becomes clear that androgens are important hormones that affect both men and women.
