The problem with slipping clutch on cars, which are usually classified as domestic classics, is well known. This defect causes not only serious inconvenience in driving, but also entails unplanned financial losses. Slipping of the clutch leads to a rather quick failure of the release bearings, wear of the discs and combustion of the entire basket as a whole. This article is intended to answer the questions: why does the clutch slip and what needs to be done in a particular case?
How to identify this defect?
Clutch slippage can be easily detected independently, without the use of special equipment.
To do this, you must perform the following series of simple steps:
- start the engine;
- turn on neutral gear;
- apply the hand brake;
- step on the gas pedal;
- squeeze grip;
- go to the first speed;
- release the clutch pedal.
By all rules, as a result of these manipulations, the engine should eventually stall. If this does not happen, the engine continues to work, and even extraneous sounds or a burning smell appear, which means that the clutch is slipping and repair measures should be taken immediately. This is due not only to financial reasons, but also due to security reasons.
Clutch slipping reasons
There may be several reasons for this effect. As a rule, they arise because of the characteristic driving style, which is called sports. Sharp acceleration and braking, frequent gear changes significantly reduce the clutch service life, although AvtoVAZ determines it at 75-85 thousand kilometers. In addition, experts argue that the use of trailers can significantly affect the clutch performance of a car. It is believed that they are able to significantly reduce the life cycle of components and mechanisms of an automobile element. Consider the most common actual causes of clutch slippage.
Oil spillage
Often, if the clutch slips, the reasons for this lie in the ingress of oil or other technical fluid into the basket. Oil enters the surface of the release plate, flywheel, or lining of the driven disk due to leakage of the rear oil seal of the knee shaft. Often the cause of the leak is the excessive oil level in the gearbox housing. In these cases, if the clutch slips, the VAZ-2107 is repaired very simply. It will be quite enough to eliminate the cause of leaks and clean out those system components that have oil. You can do this with white spirit or gasoline. In the case of liquid getting on the friction linings, they will also have to be cleaned with sandpaper of small caliber.
Disc wear
Friction linings on discs tend to wear off over time.
As a rule, not only does the clutch slip, but the pedal’s free play is also significantly reduced. In this case, there can only be one way out of this situation - replacing the entire linings or clutch discs. It must be remembered that if only pads are replaced, then careful attention must be paid to the condition of the pads. If they have damage or burnt areas, they must also be replaced.
Spring damage
Another reason why the clutch slips can be the failure of the pressure spring.
In this case, the spring is simply not able to create the necessary pressure on the disk. A damaged or worn spring must be replaced with a new one.
Lack of gaps in the shutdown drive
Another reason why the clutch is slipping (VAZ-2107 or 2105, it doesn’t matter) is the incorrect operation of its drive. Most often this is due to the fact that the necessary clearance of the clutch disengagement drive is simply absent. This problem is easily eliminated by adjusting to the desired values.
Lack of pedal free play
Often the clutch slips (the VAZ-2107 often sins this) and due to the fact that the pedal has too little free play.
The manufacturer has set the range of values 25 ... 35 mm. This indicator is quite simple to measure with a simple ruler and, if necessary, make adjustments.
There are other reasons because of which the clutch of VAZs of any model stalls, and the Seven in particular.
They are not so common, compared with those listed above. But you still need to know about them. In particular, the following malfunctions can be mentioned:
- Peeling of friction lining. The pad itself may not have visible damage or burnt areas. But as a result of exfoliation, it ceases to perceive the load with its entire surface, which leads to slipping.
- Overheating of the release plate. As a result of exceeding the temperature values of the maximum possible heat-absorbing characteristics of the clutch disc, its permanent expansion occurs, which causes a slipping effect. Of course, this defect cannot be fixed on the go. But you can easily determine it by the characteristic coating of burning and scale on the disk itself.

Dismantling, repair and replacement of clutch parts is a rather labor-intensive work and requires rather deep knowledge, extensive experience, as well as the availability of special tools and equipment.
In addition, during repairs performed independently, the risk of violating the correct settings and adjustments is quite high, which will turn the replacement of parts into Sisyphus labor.
