AGM battery: features and benefits

A modern battery is able to provide the car with a rated starting current for scrolling engine units at any time of the year. Moreover, its charge is enough for long-term operation of speakers, televisions connected to power from the cigarette lighter, and even huge subwoofers. One of the batteries that most modern cars are equipped with is an AGM battery. We’ll talk about him today.

History of occurrence

For the first time, an AGM battery was developed in the 80s of the last century by engineers from the global Johnson Controls Inc. At one time, this company was a leader in the production of batteries. It was she who first proposed the revolutionary technology for creating launchers - Absorptive Glass Mat. Literally, this phrase is translated as “absorbing fiberglass”.

In practice, it was tested on military vehicles, after which from 1985 to the present day a maintenance-free AGM battery has been mass-produced in the world. By the way, he found application not only in cars and trucks, but also in many military fighters.

What are the differences?

Externally, this device is no different from standard car batteries. The case is plastic, on top there are two terminals with positive and negative polarity located parallel to each other. Their main difference lies in the composition. Under the housing, the AGM battery contains a series of lead plates filled with microporous fiberglass based material. The latter acts as a kind of sponge that binds the electrolyte. Due to its properties, the microporous material absorbs and holds it, while preventing it from leaking. In this case, the “sponge” is able to hold the electrolyte in any position, regardless of the current location of the battery. Layers of microporous material and electrode plates are located around the entire perimeter of the battery case, thereby filling its entire space. Their layout resembles a large layer cake - lead elements are constantly alternating with fiberglass.

Benefits of using

What gives us this characteristic arrangement of plates and microporous material? Firstly, this is safety, because such a battery eliminates the possibility of harmful chemical fumes. Secondly, the AGM battery is durable. Due to the low discharge threshold and resistance to the recharge cycle, its lead plates and electrolyte are less subject to wear. Thirdly, this battery is very resistant to operation in harsh conditions with constant temperature changes and moisture concentration.

How to charge an AGM battery?

Charging such a battery is very simple. To do this, you must have the appropriate tool (charger for AGM-batteries) and a 220-volt DC source. After connecting the terminals after approximately 18-20 hours, your battery will be fully charged. This will be signaled by a green light on the device.
