Chinese universities are becoming increasingly popular among Russian applicants. This state of affairs is the result of the deliberate efforts of the Chinese government, which over the past decades has taken steps to improve the quality of higher education in the country.
China's prestigious universities
All the prestigious universities of China are grouped into the so-called "C9 League." This alliance is a Chinese counterpart to the American Ivy League and the British Russell group. It is universities in the league that account for 20% of all scientific publications and significant government spending.
Actually, as the official organization, the League was created according to the order of the PRC government, which set the task in 1998 to popularize Chinese education in the international educational services market.
The following universities are part of the "C9 League":
- Fudan University.
- Harbin Polytechnic.
- University of Beijing.
- Shanghai University of Transport.
- Tsinghua University.
- Scientific and Technical University of China.
- Xi'an Transport University.
- Zhejiang University.
The main advantage of studying at universities in the League is the ability to use resources, both intellectual, and technical, of other universities. The C9 League universities have joint educational programs, student and teacher exchange programs , and are constantly in touch with leading universities in other countries, but, above all, the USA and Great Britain.
History of Fudan University
The Fudan Public School, which served as the basis for the creation of the university, was founded in 1905, and its organizer and director was the famous Chinese philosopher Ma Xiangbo. The name of the school included two characters, the combination of which translates as "the sky shines day after day."
In the first period of its existence, teaching at the school was based on the principles of Confucian virtue, the study of traditional philosophy and the cultivation of curiosity and independence in students' desire for knowledge.
In this form, the school lasted twelve years, until it received the status of a private university in 1917. The educational institution became known as Private Fudan University. By 1927, the university had seventeen faculties, including journalism, law, and pedagogy.
In 1937, due to the retreat of the Kuomintang army, the university campus was evacuated to Chongqing, which by that time had become the capital of the Kuomintang government. Five years later, the university returned to Shanghai, after the formation of China received its current name - Fudan University.
University structure
Fudan University in Shanghai consists of 17 institutes and 69 faculties, in which there are 73 specialties of bachelors, 156 masters and 201 specialties for doctoral and graduate students.
At all levels of education, including distance education, forty-five thousand people study at the university. In addition, Fudan University ranks second in the country in the number of foreign students. In total, 1750 foreigners study at the educational institution.
The university has 2600 full-time teachers of various ranks and researchers. Among the 1350 professors and associate professors, and 30 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Technical Academy.
Scientific activity
As in other universities of the βLeague S9β, Fudan University pays great attention to the integration of educational activities and research projects. Students from early years are encouraged to be included in the scientific activities of the university through participation in programs that are implemented on the basis of research centers.
In addition to the faculties, Fudan University has nine national research centers, seventy-seven research institutes, and twenty-five research stations for post-doctoral research. Five national research laboratories at the university deserve special mention, in which highly qualified specialists are engaged in interdisciplinary research.
Student opportunities
The university pays great attention to the development of the human potential of students and teachers and concern for their quality of life. Students and workers have access to ten university hospitals that are integrated in educational and research processes. Students of medical programs practice in university medical complexes.
Paying great attention to the integration of Chinese education in the international system and international exchange, the university administration is trying to make comfortable the stay of numerous foreign students at the university. To do this, there is a student hostel, which can accommodate foreigners who came to the university from foreign countries. The university has four campuses, each of which is located in the historical center of Shanghai.
A special mention is worthy of the university library, which was founded in 1918 as a reading room. At the moment, the library fund has more than 45 million copies and is regularly updated by both Chinese publications and publications in foreign languages. Today the library is a multifunctional multimedia complex, on the basis of which access to international libraries is also provided, there is a complex system for finding the right books and periodicals.
The system of selection of applicants
Fudan University is one of the five most difficult universities to enter the country. Since the structure of Fudan allows students to complete a high-quality comprehensive training course in all areas of knowledge, including the humanities and arts, it is very popular among future students. However, according to official statistics, only 0.2% of applicants can become students of Shanghai University.
Following the decisions made, the administration has reduced the number of academic hours, giving students more time for independent and research work, thereby bringing their standards to the international level. However, to enter the university, Chinese students must pass an extremely difficult entrance exam, the results of which are extremely strictly evaluated by the examination committee.
Tuition fee
The graduate school of Fudan University is one of the most expensive levels of higher education. For foreign students, the cost of some specialties can reach 75 thousand yuan per academic year, which is approximately 750 000 rubles.
At the same time, a language course lasting one year costs two hundred thousand, which is not so much, given the intensity of training and the highest level of teaching staff. We should also mention the prestige of the university, which will make it easy to find application for the knowledge gained in language courses.
Student reviews of Fudan University in Shanghai are always positive. But quite often you can find references to the extraordinary exertion of forces that students are forced to exert for training. However, there are other sources confirming the high international status of the university. Reviews of Fudan University can be confirmed by the fact that in some ratings it occupies the fortieth line of the best universities in the world. At the same time, in the internal Chinese system, the university is stable in fourth place.
International exchange
As already mentioned, in the modern Chinese educational system, much attention is paid to international academic exchange. This issue is partially solved by sending Chinese students to study abroad at the expense of the treasury, partially by inviting foreign professors to teach in the PRC.
However, the participation of foreign students in the scientific and student life of Chinese universities is no less important. The Chinese Government sees such an exchange as an opportunity not only to earn money on the provision of educational services, but also a way to spread Chinese influence and culture through soft power.
In order for as many foreign students as possible to study in China, the International Confucius Institute has been created, where you can get all the necessary information about studying in China and receiving grants at Fudan University. The institute has branches in Moscow, St. Petersburg and other Russian cities.
