In industrial conditions, in the manufacture of alcohol, a special distillation column is used, which is necessary for the separation of vapors depending on the boiling point of liquids. The equipment is quite complicated and is practically not used at home. A moonshine still usually comes with an instrument of a similar operating principle - a reflux condenser. Of course, the design of this device is much simpler than that of a distillation column. If desired, you can make a reflux condenser with your own hands.

The principle of operation of this design is identical to the principle of operation of a distillation column. Separation occurs due to the difference in the boiling points of alcohol and oils. Home-made reflux condensers always have an elongated shape. Due to this, different temperatures are created inside the tank at different heights. Since ethyl alcohol begins to boil at 78.4 Β° C, the height is usually selected so that suitable conditions are created in the neck area. Fusel oils are deposited back into the evaporator. Method one: use a glass jar

  1. Steam at high temperature leaves the pan and enters the reflux condenser, where it is cooled to 78–85 degrees;
  2. Vapors of ethyl alcohol pass further into the coil, and all impurities having a high temperature settle on the bottom and walls of the vessel.

So, how to make a reflux condenser with your own hands? In the lid of the can will need to cut two holes (inlet and outlet). Hoses for connection with the design of the moonshine can be made independently. Fittings are ordered in the workshop. Best of all, if they are made of stainless steel. The inlet fitting must be shorter than the outlet fitting.

Method two: use a glass tube

  1. Glass tube with through holes.
  2. A section in diameter coinciding with the neck of a bulb. This part is put on the tube.
  3. Broken glass. Pieces should have an oblong shape.
  4. Two small round mesh. You can buy them in a store specializing in the sale of smoking mixtures (parts intended for bongs).

For this, you can use some kind of universal glue. Next, the tube is filled with pieces of broken glass (not too tight). In this case, it is necessary to ensure that they are located vertically. Then a second mesh is glued on top of the tube and a thin section is put on. Dephlegmator is ready. The design is inserted into a flask with a heated liquid.

Method Three: Using a Thermos

If desired, it is also not too difficult to make a reflux condenser from a thermos with your own hands. For this, it will need, first of all, to be disassembled. The bottom is cleaned with sandpaper, a bracket is welded to it, a wire is passed through it, which is nailed to the wall. Thermos pull on themselves. The welding seam connecting the flask and the lid is grinded until a gap appears around its perimeter. For this purpose, use a drill with a special nozzle. After that, the inner flask can be removed from the housing. A hole is drilled in it in the center and a ventilation tube is soldered to it. Next, the flask is attached to the bottom with a drilled hole and a tube. A selection unit is soldered to the neck. A hole is drilled in the assembly itself and a tube is inserted. The sleeve is made of fluoroplastic. It also needs to drill a hole in which to insert the tube. The device is ready. It will need to be screwed to a column assembled from pipes.

If you don’t feel like wasting time making too complex a design, you can make a reflux condenser yourself from an ordinary can. However, the device from a thermos will turn out to be more thorough and effective.
