Poster pen designed for calligraphic inscriptions. The tool was in demand for creating inscriptions on old movie posters, was used in drawing, for applying slogans on fabric. If you need to make a budget poster for an event, and ordering a banner is expensive, then a poster pen is your faithful assistant. Where else have such tools been used?
Feathers poster USSR
In Soviet times, poster feathers were sold in small boxes (without holders). The latter were sold separately and were in great short supply. There was a thin tip on the holder, where the pen itself stuck.
In the absence of a handle for a tool, it was replaced with improvised items, for example, a tool from the Cookware set. The poster pen was also glued to brushes, pencils, pens. Dressed with mascara or gouache. As a rule, black, blue and red colors. Less commonly, white was used to write slogans on red cloth.
Soviet-made feathers were sold in sets, usually 8 each. Line width:
- 2 mm;
- 4.5 mm;
- 6 mm;
- 8 mm;
- 1 cm;
- 1.5 cm;
- 1.9 cm.
They were given funny names:
In order to write beautifully at least one word, a lot of work had to be done. Measure the width of the pen, draw the distance between the letters, their height and width. When the ink was dry, the pencil lines had to be erased.
Poster pen today
Now the pen is applied with Gothic inscriptions or Arabic script. Ink drawing is also taught in some art schools. Studios are opened for people who consider calligraphy to be art, in which they teach writing and drawing with this tool.
The art of owning a poster pen is a thing of the past. Today it is used very rarely, and for people with a subtle sense of style, a fountain pen is suitable for work . She is much more practical than her predecessors. There are models that you can refill or change ink cartridges. Pens are often equipped with interchangeable feathers with different line widths.
How to work with a pen
First you need to equip your workplace: there should be a lot of space and you should be comfortable. You need to sit straight, with a straight back. Feet should rest on the floor. If you are right handed, the emphasis should be on the left hand. All weight must be carried to this side. Relax your right hand. Take the pen like a pen. The little finger and middle finger need to be bent and put your hand on them. Thus, the emphasis of the right hand will be at two points: on the nails of the little finger and ring finger and in the elbow.
Consider several exercises for learning how to work with any kind of steel feathers:
- Movement with fingers only. Practice drawing a snake in this way on paper.
- Articulation or slide movement. A hand from the elbow to the wrist should work as a single mechanism. Draw on a wave sheet.
- Muscle movement. Draw circles on a sheet in a spiral, freely moving your hand at the elbow.
There are some features in working with a wide-end tool:
- As you progress, paper needs to be moved forward.
- The trajectory of the figure runs from top to bottom and from left to right.
- You cannot change the angle of the pen.
Calligraphy is an art that develops a sense of beauty, teaches calm, endurance, enjoyment of the moment of writing or drawing. Naturally, today there is no need to create handwritten posters. Printing houses do a great job of this. But to write love letters, sign important documents or create memoirs is much nicer with a fountain pen.
