Kirsan Ilyumzhinov is a native of the capital of Kalmykia (the city of Elista). He was born on April 5, 1962. His father was a representative of the local party elite, heading the industry and transport department of the regional city committee of the CPSU, and his mother worked as a veterinarian. After serving in the army, the young man worked for a short time as a team leader at the Zvezda factory, but he soon realized that it was rather difficult to live without a higher education and submitted documents to MGIMO. In the late 80s, thanks to an impeccable knowledge of the Japanese language, he will lead one of the branches of the largest automotive corporation Mitsubishi. Each transaction with a used car brought Ilyumzhinov a good income in the form of a percentage, and after a while he began to expand the geography of his business, at the same time opening several large service stations.
Business goes uphill
Gradually, things in the entrepreneurial field at Ilyumzhinov began to take shape in the best way.
He became a member of the leadership of a number of banking institutions and commercial enterprises. The Russian press began to dazzle with headlines that, according to unconfirmed reports, a graduate of MGIMO “lent” 10 billion rubles from federal officials to purchase wool. As it turned out later, the money disappeared in an unknown direction.
