Adjustment of valves

Incorrectly adjusted valves of the engine of a VAZ-2101 automobile can lead to irreparable consequences. First of all, the motorist himself will suffer losses, who will feel the increase in fuel consumption and the loss of dynamic characteristics of the car. But if all these points do not particularly affect the technical condition of the engine, then the rapid wear of valves and pushers can lead to failure of the gas distribution system. To prevent this from happening, the valve adjustment should take place in a timely manner, correctly and competently, therefore, before starting the execution of the relevant valve adjustment work, you must first study the theoretical part. This will be discussed in the article.

So, for starters, you need to have everything you need on hand. Valve adjustment cannot take place without the appropriate tool: a set of wrenches and open-end wrenches, several screwdrivers, a spare gasket for the valve cover, a key for cranking the crankshaft, and a special 0.15 mm thick probe. All these tools must be in the home workshop. It is also worthwhile to find out the procedure for adjusting valves from the reference literature, and it would be even better to write out this order on a piece of paper or print from a digital medium.

And do not forget that the valves are adjusted on a cold engine, since when heated, the metal expands, and this leads to inaccurate results.

Now we proceed directly to the adjustment. After removing the valve cover of the engine, it is necessary to rotate the crankshaft so that the marks on the engine housing in the front part (on the cover) and the camshaft sprocket coincide. With this action, you set the fourth engine cylinder to top dead center on the compression stroke. According to the technical documentation, the valves should be adjusted on the 3rd and 4th cylinder, namely, valves No. 6 and No. 8 (the countdown goes in front from the side of the sprocket). You need to try to stick the probe between the camshaft and cam. If everything went fine and the probe passes between them with little effort, then adjusting the valve pushers is not necessary.

If the probe passes freely, absolutely not in contact with rubbing surfaces, or if it is impossible to shove it between them, then you need to carry out adjustment. With one key on “17” we release the rocker clamping nut on the adjustable valve, and with the key on “13” we screw or unscrew the pusher (if the probe was initially loose, then screw it in, and vice versa). Further, when the desired result is achieved (the probe passes with easy engagement, but does not bend), it is necessary to tighten everything and re-check. If after checking everything is fine, then you can safely proceed to the second valve.

Valve adjustment consists of four stages of cranking the crankshaft. The first stage was described above, followed by the second. The crankshaft must be rotated 180 degrees clockwise (yes, exactly 180 degrees, because the camshaft will rotate only 90 degrees). We carry out the same operations with cams under No. 4 and No. 7, then rotate the crankshaft an additional 180 degrees and adjust the 1st and 3rd cams. In the end, you need to crank the crankshaft an additional 180 degrees and adjust the cams for No. 5 and No. 2. If you wish, if you are not completely sure of the correctness of the adjustment, you can repeat the whole process from the beginning.

So, now you know what valve adjustment is, what tools are needed for this, and what is the sequence of the procedure. Now you need to check the previously unscrewed nuts on the rockers and you can install the valve cover. The gasket for it changes only if necessary, so if oil does not squeeze out from under it, then you can not change it!
