Marburg structural wallpaper for painting is a bright eye-catching type of wallpaper among the entire range of finishing materials. Their peculiarity is a combination of the positive characteristics of traditional roll wallpaper and the possibility of painting with emulsion or acrylic paint.
They are suitable for gluing both walls and ceiling. Having pasted such wallpapers once, you donโt have to think about selecting and buying new ones when it becomes necessary to make repairs. They can be repainted more than once.
The main advantage of structural wallpaper is a wide selection of materials of different textures (relief drawings) that can be painted using different techniques.
Today we will try to understand the intricacies of the choice of material and understand how the wallpaper is glued for painting.
Wallpaper for painting: species diversity
Structural wallpaper is divided into three groups:
- duplex paper;
- non-woven;
- fiberglass wallpaper.
Choose wallpaper for painting
They are easy to distinguish by color - they are always white and have a deep embossed texture. Structural wallpaper is durable. They withstand a large number of repaints, while maintaining their aesthetic appearance. The optimal number of updates for paper wallpapers for painting (cheap) is up to 7, non-woven - up to 15, cullet - up to 20. Service life - up to 30 years.
Structural Marburg wallpapers perfectly mask wall irregularities, which at a low price for the finishing material makes them preferred in the choice. In recent years, expensive wallpapers with a beautiful pattern are chosen only by those who are going to make designer repairs at home.
Features of paper wallpaper
Paper structural wallpaper consists of two layers: the first is paper, the second is with special water-repellent impregnation, which increases the wear resistance of the material. In addition, the waterproof layer allows wet cleaning of the walls pasted over with them.
Features of non-woven wallpaper
Non-woven wallpaper shows a high level of adhesion with the surface pasted on them, which not only allows you to hide the imperfections of the walls, but also give them additional strength. The basis of the canvas of such wallpaper is non-woven, on top of which a foamed vinyl coating with perforation is applied. This coating is ductile, so sticking wallpaper on the wall is practically devoid of significant drawbacks. It is used for finishing new buildings and houses, which over time can shrink. The non-woven layer not only does not tear, but also does not allow the cracks to spread.
Glass Wallpaper Features
The basis of the third type of structural wallpaper is made of non-woven fabric, and fiberglass is used for the top layer (made of quartz sand with the addition of various impregnations). Hence the name - cullet or fabric wallpaper.
They are called fabric ones because of the possibility of imitation of textile texture: โcanvasโ, โmattingโ, โcobwebsโ. The distinctive characteristics of cullet include high moisture resistance, fire safety properties, increased strength, wear resistance. This is the best option for finishing office and public buildings, cafes, hotels and boutiques.
Important! Fiberglass in combination with a non-woven base is excellent for reinforcing walls and partitions constructed from foam blocks or drywall.
Generalized rules for pasting
- Even if you do not need to finish the ceiling, finish all preparatory work on the surface (plaster, primer, paint) even before the walls are finished.
- Be sure to prepare the walls before pasting: plaster and grind new walls, old ones (from which the wallpaper was removed) - it is enough to ground. Sticking can only be started after 24 hours, when the primer is completely dry.
- Cut paper wallpaper panels with a margin of up to 5 cm above and below. Non-woven wallpaper is not always amenable to cutting, and fiberglass-based wallpapers are glued to the wall with unwinding of the roll, and then trimmed.
- The consistency of wallpaper glue for duplex paper wallpaper should be thicker than for simplex. It is necessary to prepare the adhesive composition, strictly following the instructions.
- Too much liquid glue will wet and soften the wallpaper, making it more vulnerable. In addition, heavy panels can not stay on the wall and fall off.
- Non-woven and fiberglass-based wallpapers are glued to special glue.
- Since the wallpaper is glued back to back, work starts from the corner from left to right. Since the wallpaper is dense, the overlap will look unaesthetic, especially after painting.
- Sizing angles must be given special attention. Finishing the corners, the strip of wallpaper is glued so that it only slightly touches the edge of the neighboring corner.
- The following panel is glued with an overlap. After attaching the wallpaper to the wall, draw a vertical stripe strip in the middle of the double layer of wallpaper. Arm yourself with a ruler and a clerical knife and cut the wallpaper on this strip, removing the trim and smoothing the joint.
- After finishing work, the joints of the walls with the ceiling and floor can be decorated with a plinth and baguette, which not only perform a decorative function, but also help seal the joints.
Paper Wallpapering Technology
Work with two-layer wallpaper is no different from gluing with ordinary paper. Having missed the canvas, curl it up with an accordion and let it be saturated with glue, putting it off for a few minutes. While you wait, you can glue the next stretch of wallpaper with glue.
When the wallpaper is saturated with glue, unfold it and stick it on the wall. Do not forget to smooth the canvas over the surface using a wallpaper brush, roller or gauze. Cut the remnants of wallpaper with a construction or office knife when dry.
Many people ask: โHow long does the wallpaper dry after painting?โ And the experts have an answer to this question. It all depends on the amount of glue applied, but it takes at least 24 hours to dry completely.
Keep in mind that when handling paper wallpaper, you need to be careful: from excess glue, they can stretch, blister or tear, sometimes when glued too wet the fabric of paper wallpaper loses its relief. This is due to the fact that wallpaper on a paper basis is very delicate.
Technology for gluing non-woven wallpaper
Non-woven - the best wallpaper for painting. This process differs from the previous one, and in comparison with other techniques has distinctive characteristics. The flaws present in the work with paper do not have non-woven wallpaper: they do not bubble, do not break and do not deform.
Thin non-woven wallpaper is cut into strips, smeared with glue, left to be saturated with it. Sometimes wallpaper and the wall are smeared with glue, but more often this need disappears, and only the surface of the wall is covered with glue.
Sticking wallpaper for painting (non-woven) looks like this:
- A piece of wall is smeared with glue a little more than the width of the wallpaper itself.
- Wallpaper is unwound from a roll and pasted on a wall. Pressing with a rubber spatula, cut along the skirting line. With this technique of gluing, there is usually no need to smooth the wallpaper: they themselves fit well on a flat vertical surface.
Glass Wallpapering Technology
Getting started, ground the walls with a colorless latex primer, since fiberglass-based wallpapers are fairly transparent.
The method of gluing walls resembles the technology of finishing with non-woven wallpaper. The only difference is glue. For glass, you must buy a special adhesive designed for heavy types of canvas.
After gluing, when the glass cloth wallpaper dries, they are additionally covered with a layer of glue, on top of which paint is applied.
Important! Fiberglass can only be painted after the primer layer has completely dried.
Sticking wallpaper for painting involves the use of special water-dispersible or latex paint. Using a tinted color scheme, it can be decorated in any color.
Compared with other types of wallpaper, wall covering based on fiberglass has high strength characteristics. Walls with such a finish are not afraid of scratches or other mechanical damage. In addition, such wallpapers can be washed with a brush with detergent, without fear of spoiling them.
Sticking wallpaper for painting is not only practical and economical. It is easy to work with such finishing materials, and you can apply paint in any technique, which makes it possible to roam the imagination.
