The artist was born in May 1931 in the city of Kiev, Ukraine. His father was a military engineer, his mother a trade worker. Misha was not the only child in the family - he had a younger brother, Vsevolod.

When the boy was only ten years old, the Great Patriotic War began, and the Brusilovsky family was urgently evacuated to the Southern Urals, to the small town of Troitsk. In those days, no one imagined what talent Brusilovsky Misha Shaevich was hiding in himself. The family of the future artist returned to Kiev immediately after his liberation from occupation.

Life during the war

Brusilovsky’s father died at the front, while the boy and his brother lived in Troitsk in the house of his aunt. Father's sister was a doctor - she was also mobilized. The trip to the ambulance train made a great impression on the future artist. Here the boy helped medical workers care for the wounded. During long stops at the stations, Brusilovsky studied nearby villages, got acquainted with local residents and exchanged salt with them for food.

The return to the homeland occurred in 1943. The hunger times forced the teenager to earn extra money on the street - together with other boys he cleaned his shoes on the station square. Unfortunately, most of the proceeds should have been given to local criminal authorities. One of them was called "Cat". One day, on the eve of the boss’s birthday, Brusilovsky painted it with plain colored pencils. He appreciated the boy's talent at its true worth - thanks to him, Brusilovsky entered a boarding school for gifted children, which became the first place of his education.

Exactly a year later, Brusilovsky Misha Shaevich changed his studies, and moved to the art school. Shevchenko - this organization was part of the Kiev Art Institute. It was not possible to enter the latter - persecution on ethnic grounds did their job.

He became a professional artist after graduating from the Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. Repin in St. Petersburg. Brusilovsky studied at the Faculty of Graphics. The distribution system in force at that time sent Brusilovsky to the capital of the Urals, the city of Sverdlovsk (currently Yekaterinburg).

Getting a vocational education played a decisive role in the subsequent life of Misha Shaevich. Arriving in Yekaterinburg, he began to teach at the Art School. In parallel, working with the publishing house as an illustrator, Brusilovsky made many interesting acquaintances with people of art. Among them are Vitaly Volovich and Andrei Antonov.

The first exhibition of the artist's works was organized in 1961. Then the work of Brusilovsky was severely criticized - not one of his paintings was approved and appreciated.

Now it’s hard to find a person who does not know who Misha Shaevich Brusilovsky is. The biography of the artist is not so well known that does not reduce its saturation. The difficult fate of the boy who survived the war ended at the age of 85 - the artist died of cancer on November 3, 2016. The administration of Yekaterinburg will soon plan to open a museum named after Mikhail Brusilovsky in order to perpetuate his memory for many years.

Joining forces with Gennady Mosin, a friend of the artist since his studies at the institute, Brusilovsky creates a canvas that means a challenge to the chairman of the Union of Artists of the RSFSR V. Serov. Coordinating with the Art Council a sketch depicting a sweet and calm grandfather Lenin, Mosin and Brusilovsky in the final version of the picture depict the leader of the proletariat as a determined and cruel man.

The response of the Art Council was immediate: Serov was exhausted to prevent the image from reaching the masses. However, the artists achieved their goal, and the picture was exhibited in Moscow. However, even here the chairman of the Council of Painters did not give up: he appeared at the exhibition and made a terrible noise. Then the organizers put a sentry next to the canvas, which was instructed to drive away a particularly impressionable audience.

The painting "1918" brought all-Union fame not only to Gennady Mosin, but also to Misha Brusilovsky. The beginning of independent, informed creativity was laid.
