Dental prosthetics is an important industry in dentistry. Today, a very small percentage of the population has good health by nature. This also applies to dental problems. Therefore, almost every person at a certain age turned to a prosthetist. And all as one they say that the most unpleasant moment in this process is to walk with honed teeth, waiting for the manufacture of a permanent prosthesis.
Now, dentists offer their patients more comfortable services. Temporary crowns will allow you to feel confident in any situation. And patients of prosthetists will not have to cover their mouths with a handkerchief to hide a dentition defect.
What it is?
Temporary crowns are orthopedic structures that are installed for the period of manufacture of permanent prostheses. These products are quite functional. They allow a person to comfortably survive the period of prosthetics. The patient has the opportunity to chew food and feel confident due to the fact that the aesthetics of the smile remains at its best. There are also several more advantages that experts are talking about. We will talk about this in more detail in a separate subsection of the article.
Material for temporary crowns
To date, there are two options for the manufacture of temporary prostheses. They can be performed in the laboratory, like conventional crowns. And the doctor makes them in his office, right in the patient’s mouth. For this, special composite and plastic materials are used. All of them are safe and hypoallergenic.
Laboratory version of the prosthesis
Making temporary crowns in the laboratory takes one day. Before turning the tooth, the specialist makes a cast of plaster. Then he is sent to the laboratory. There, a dental technician makes a crown. The product is polished, adjusted to the patient’s bite and installed on special cement. The fixative allows the doctor to easily remove the prosthesis when the need arises. As we can see, temporary crowns for teeth are made quite quickly, but at the same time they make it possible to carry out high-quality prosthetics.
Composite dentures
This option is even faster than the method we examined earlier. It takes about 20 minutes. As in the first case, the doctor makes a cast of plaster. Then the grinding of the dental unit is carried out. After the procedure is completed, the doctor pours a special composite material into the previously prepared cast. All this is put on a turned tooth. When the mixture hardens, the doctor removes the mold. Then, in a few minutes, he polishes and adjusts the temporary crown. This product is also installed on temporary cement.
Positive aspects of temporary prosthetics
The installation of temporary crowns, in addition to the aesthetic factor, has several more advantages. These aspects allow the specialist to perform better prosthetics, restoring the lost functions of the patient as much as possible.
1. Designs make it possible to prevent the pain of honed teeth. If the nerve has not been removed, the patient may react sharply to a change in temperature, sweet or salty, since the protective layer of enamel is removed.
2. Temporary crowns act as a barrier to the penetration of microbes into the tissue of a turned tooth. If they are not installed, the nerve can become infected. Unfortunately, inflammation will make itself felt after the installation of a permanent prosthesis.
3. Designs prevent the displacement of machined dental units. It turns out that this process also has a place to be. It plays a negative role, as it further violates the integrity of the structure.
4. Temporary crowns are also set to prevent gum damage. At the same time, they help to properly form its edge. This factor is an important point in prosthetics.
And what can we say about the opportunity to smile without hesitation? In general, for many patients, the medical side of the issue, most often, is not entirely clear, but the aesthetic side is the main priority in deciding to use the structures in question during prosthetics.
Precautionary measures
Now it's time to talk about the fact that temporary crowns (see photo below) require a careful attitude to them. Since a temporary fixative is used, accordingly, it does not have strong adhesion. Therefore, the doctor always advises the patient after installing the prosthesis.
The point is that you can not chew or chew too hard food. It is necessary to try to redistribute the load on the other side of the jaw. Such precautions will avoid unpleasant surprises.
Carrying out hygiene procedures while wearing temporary structures is not only possible, but also necessary. Brushing your teeth with a brush and toothpaste cannot harm them. The only moment: you must try to do everything carefully. Do not use electronic brushes during this period.
Dentists also say that the use of dental floss should be carried out in a special way. It can be run into interdental openings. However, you must remove it by stretching the edges horizontally.
Reviews of specialists
Prosthetists argue that the designs in question allow them to do their job more efficiently. An important factor in this matter is that the patient also notes the comfort of the procedure. Such a seemingly insignificant detail as a temporary crown brought only pluses to prosthetics.
Specialists sometimes describe situations in which the patient’s temporary design has flown. They recommend immediately contacting your doctor for re-cementing. Even if visiting the dentistry urgently is not possible, you need to get advice by phone. As a rule, the doctor may recommend inserting the crown back. It is still necessary to wear it, so that the turned teeth do not move. And it can happen quite quickly. Also, the product will protect the nerve from irritants, and the patient from pain.
You need to remove the crown only for the period of sleep and food intake. Without a fixative, it can be swallowed, so do not risk it. If the design does not sit well on the tooth, then experts recommend lubricating it with toothpaste or petroleum jelly.
Prevention
In conclusion, it remains to add that it is necessary to pay great attention to the prevention of oral diseases. Visit your dental office every six months. Do not delay the visit to the doctor if you notice even a slight damage to the integrity of the enamel. Timely seeking help will help keep your teeth in their original form for as long as possible. Then you don’t need the services of a prosthetist.
