"Nautilus" belong to one of the most popular domestic rock bands. It was founded in Sverdlovsk. This generation is known to the modern generation as Yekaterinburg.

The official year of foundation is the period from 1982 to 1983. This is the time when Vyacheslav Butusov began working together with Dmitry Umetsky on the first album entitled “Relocation”.

Title

Perhaps many of you will feel a sense of surprise, but the first composition of the Nautilus Pompilius group was called Ali Baba and 40 robbers. A year later, namely in 1983, Andrei Makarov (sound engineer) proposed the name Nautilus. However, two years later, Ilya Kormiltsev added the name. Thus a group called "Nautilus Pompilius" was formed.

It is noteworthy that in those years in the Soviet Union there was a huge amount with the same name. For example, Muscovites listened to Nautilus with Eugene Margulis, who had left the Time Machine ensemble shortly before. Petersburg "Nautilus" at that time released a second album, which was called "Invisible" (1985).

In order to avoid confusion, the St. Petersburg team Nautilus Pompilius added an accompanying note to the album. It was reported to listeners that this group was named after a mollusk, which by its nature is not only beautiful, but also charming.

History of the founding of a musical collective

In 1978, students of the Sverdlovsk Architectural Institute - Umetsky and Butusov, created an association, which later became the Nautilus Pompilius group, the photo of which you see below.

In the early years of its existence, the collective performed first at dances. Then they began to perform rock band songs from the west. The first attempt to record their own material on film media took place in 1982. It was at this time that Butusov managed to record several songs at once, which later entered the album under the title “Relocation,” which became his debut.

At that time, the Western group Led Zeppelin had a noticeable influence on the St. Petersburg team. The next Invisible album made it clear to fans that the composition of the Nautilus Pompilius band had changed its style. The guys reoriented to a new wave in the likeness of rock bands in Leningrad.

Climb to the top of recognition

This musical team gained fame throughout the country when the album "Separation", dated 1986, was released. Then the musical group gained a new image, with which the Nautilus are most associated. Their appearance was characterized by a pseudo-war form, partial make-up, as well as avaricious, however expressive plastic. The composition of the Nautilus Pompilius band in 1987 refuted the notion of Sverdlovsk rock bands. Musicians claimed to become leaders of domestic rock along with such legends as “Alice”, “Aquarium” and “Cinema”.

The success of the team cemented the performance at the festival in Vilnius in 1987, as well as in Podolsk and Moscow. The central press was full of publications about the rise of a new rock legend. It is worth noting that the collective gained popularity due to musical expressiveness and melodism, which sometimes, as musicologists note, border on hit points. The inhabitants of the Union also liked the texts of Ilya Kormiltsev, who skillfully wrote songs on pressing social problems. And during the years of perestroika, the leader’s figure turned out to be charismatic and in demand.

Peak of popularity

All-Union fame for the composition of the Nautilus Pompilius group fell in 1988. At this time, the musicians actively traveled around the Soviet Union and even traveled abroad at the end of the year. They gave a concert in Finland after filming in Finnish in a film about Soviet rock called Sickle and Guitar. The group released the very first disc entitled "Prince of Silence." The team deemed it necessary to include the replayed hits “Nau” from the last two albums. Thus, the composition of the plate included such songs as “The Last Letter”, “Chained Up”, “Casanova”, “Khaki Ball”, “View from the Screen”. In addition, several new compositions were added to the disc, which fans of the group heard only at concerts, but they have not yet been replicated on musical media, including the composition “I want to be with you”.

Subsequently, this album became the most hit in the history of the team. However, some believe that at that time Sergey Lomakin provided them with popularity in one of the articles of the Musical Truth newspaper, as well as the release of the Vzglyad program.

The consequences of the first creative crisis

The endless schedule, touring, financial success, as well as skirmishes with the nascent domestic show business, did not have the best effect on relations within the team. In the creative workshop quarrels, constant disagreements began to be heard, and also the first changes in the composition of the Nautilus Pompilius group took place.

The peak in this crisis was the departure of one of the founders of the team. Dmitry Umetsky could not stand it. Subsequently, Butusov realized that their team was incompatible with show business. He makes a serious decision hard. The composition of the Nautilus Pompilius group changed in 1987. And the next year, Butusov, tired of the endless turmoil and problems, dismisses the group.

In 1989, the founders of the team restore creative relations. As a result, fans received a new album called “A man without a name”, in which the members of the DDT and TV groups were noted. However, another disagreement regarding the fate of the subsequent album and the future collective led already to the final termination of the creative relationship between Umecki and Butusov. The next album appears 6 years later. Butusov comes to the aid of the Apex Records company.

Thus, in 1989, Kormiltsev, Butusov, as well as Umetsky were awarded the Lenin Komsomol Prize. It is noteworthy that Kormiltsev publicly flatly refuses her. The thing is that such an organization caused a huge amount of trouble to domestic rock musicians.

Butusov didn’t come to the presentation of the prize at all. However, he transferred funds not only to the Sverdlovsk orphanage, but also to the Peace Fund. However, co-founder Umecki still attended the event, where he was awarded an award and a prize.

Heavy 90s

On the eve of the New Year in 1989, co-founder Butusov finally moved to the then Leningrad. He scored a new line-up of the Nautilus Pompilius group, a photo of which is presented in the article.

The songs "Nau" sounded in a new way. Previously, their music was filled with keyboard-saxophone sound. Now the new band has focused on a tough guitar melody. Hearing this, fans were skeptical of the changes. Thus, the first performances in the new lineup failed.

However, subsequent albums - “At random” and “Alien Earth”, proved the creative abilities of the new composition of “Nautilus Pompilius”. The hits “Walking on the Water” and “On the Shore of the Nameless River” became popular at that time.

Not only the style of the group has changed, but also the theme of the compositions. An acute social theme is a thing of the past. Butusov and Kormiltsev in their songs paid attention to philosophical and religious, as well as esoteric issues.

First Anniversary and New Losses

In 1993, the group celebrated its tenth anniversary. But, unfortunately, just at that time another disagreement began. Alexander Belyaev and Igor Belkin, who were the main guitarists, left the band.

The group was forced to invite Vadim Samoilov from the acclaimed "Agatha Christie" to record an album. It is noteworthy that he took part not only in recordings, but also in concert performances, participating in two musical groups at once. Music critics note that the Titanic album has become the most commercial creation of the new Nautilus Pompilius band.

Tortured album and another creative crisis

In 1994, members of the team noticed a creative decline, which was reflected in the album "Wings", released in 1995. Butusov and his team said it was a forced album. Journalists and musicologists considered this creation the biggest failure of the ensemble, and were also generous in taunts and attacks against the co-founder Butusov.

The role of acoustics in the work of St. Petersburg

In 1996, the Nautilus decided to conduct an experiment with acoustics. As a result, the group gives several concerts, characterized by an unprecedented rise, which fell at the beginning of March. Such an experiment allowed the members of the collective to rethink many old hits and give them not only a different sound, but also a new life.

Nautilus Pompilius: the latest roster

The final album, entitled "Yablokitai" was recorded by the breadwinner and Butusov in the winter of 1996 in the UK. The recording was attended by Boris Grebenshchikov, as well as Bill Nelson, an English musician and the band’s last producer. He contributed to the publication of the Atlantis collection, which included the early songs of The Nautilus, unknown to fans. At that moment, Vyacheslav Butusov realized that the group had completely exhausted itself. As part of this collective, he will no longer be able to write and sing new and interesting songs.

So he makes the final decision to dissolve the group. In the concert hall "Russia" in June 1997, the last performance called "The Last Swim" took place. Farewell tour of Russia put an end to the existence of the team.

One-time reunions

After the collapse of Nautilus, members of the group performed several times at festival venues - Invasion 2004, as well as Old New Rock. A few years later, namely in 2008, the musicians played a concert in honor of the 25th anniversary of the band.

Vyacheslav Butusov, who was part of the U-Peter group, prepared several recognizable hits of different periods in a new treatment. It is noteworthy that rock songs such as “Alice”, “Mumiy Troll”, “Picnic”, “Nastya”, “Time Machine”, Nike Borzov and “Vopli Vidoplyasova” sang their songs in their own way.

All the songs were compiled into a collection of two volumes called "NauBum." His presentation was held in St. Petersburg on the collective’s birthday - December 13, 2008, and in Moscow the event took place on December 17 of the same year. In addition, in the fall of 2008, a project was held in the Rock Hero project, where participants performed more than 200 remakes and covers of the group.

The winner was Oleg Karpachev. Together with the “Trunks” collective, he sang a remake of the composition “Black Birds”. His performance is also included in the collection "Boomers".

In 2008, Vyacheslav Butusov with his band “U-Piter” toured the country and performed old hits of “Nautilus”.

Interesting Facts

At the beginning of its existence, the group had a different name. She was called "Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves." After several years, this name has changed radically.
"Nautilus" were to receive the Komsomol Prize. However, most of the team members ignored her.
The musicians recorded several albums in the basement of the Sverdlovsk Institute, where the founders of the group were trained.
The song, entitled “View from the screen” is a free translation of the hit band Bananarama.
The inscription on the monument to Ilya Kormiltsev, who died of illness in 2007, was taken from a song that he wrote.
Surprisingly, even Alla Pugacheva took part in the recording of the song "Doctor of your body." She was assigned the role of backing vocalist in a recording studio. Pugacheva was outraged by Butusov's singing and began to teach him vocals, demonstrating the correct intonations. Sound engineer Kalyanov skillfully took advantage of this, mixed her voice into the final version.
Alexei Balabanov, who shot the film "Brother", fueled the interest of the legendary cinema audience in the work of "Nautilusov" The thing is that he and the founder of the group were great friends in Sverdlovsk.
In order not to incur the wrath of the KGB, the band members distributed the album “Separation” in Sverdlovsk without the last song.
Those who were at the group’s concert noticed that Butusov always had a music stand on which a notebook with lyrics was located. The fact is that the soloist has a bad memory.
