Vysoko-Petrovsky Monastery. Vysoko-Petrovsky Stauropegial Monastery

We are used to thinking that a miracle is invisible, and to see it is a rarity. This is true if you do not notice around us beautiful creations created by nature or man.

In the very center of the capital is the Vysoko-Petrovsky Monastery - an ancient and very beautiful attraction. In the annals of 1317 the first mention of the monastery is found. Moscow does not know a better monument to Peter I than the Vysoko-Petrovsky Monastery .

About the history of origin

Experts recognize the most likely version, according to which the monastery was founded by Saint Peter in 1315–1316. Its original name sounded like Peter and Paul.

Within the walls of the monastery, Metropolitan Peter decided to move to Moscow. The Assumption Monastery, founded on his advice, became the burial place of a clergyman.

The center of Russia began to rise in the state and church terms after the approval of the Metropolitan Department in Moscow.

According to this assumption, the High Petrovsky Monastery was founded in the 14th century by Saint Peter, Metropolitan of Kiev.

There is a version that the foundation of the monastery occurred after the canonization of the king. During the time of Sergius of Radonezh, the monastery that appeared appeared as the first communal monastery in Moscow. According to legend, this period is associated with the heroic deeds of Dmitry Donskoy.

According to the notes of that time, the Russian church determines the representatives of the embassy to the Patriarch of Constantinople, with the aim of putting the confessor Dmitry Donskoy Mitya into the metropolitans. Passion and confusion occurred on the ship following the Black Sea. The nominated candidate died on board the ship. The letter sent to the patriarch did not contain the signature and seal of the prince. For the right to be a candidate, a real struggle has begun. Archimandrite John from the Petrovsky Monastery was one of the contenders for the title of Primate of the Russian Church, but he did not find support among his colleagues.

The protective function of the holy monastery

According to experts, the monastery was based on a deserted, deserted place. Until 1517, the monastery was small in area and had no defensive significance. The first mention of the battle from this place is dated 1611. For shelling the Kremlin, breaking into the city, Lyapunov Prokopiy over Neglinna set up an artillery battery.

Construction is a royal affair

The burial place of noble representatives of the Naryshkins is the same Vysoko-Petrovsky Monastery. Moscow stores information about the active construction of the monastery at the end of the 17th century, during the time of Naryshkin and Peter I.

Among the builders of the Vysoko-Petrovsky Monastery and admirers are Princes Vasily III, John Kalita, Dimitri Donskoy, Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich Romanov, Metropolitan of Moscow. Divine services were conducted by Hierarchs Tikhon, Patriarch of Moscow, Mitrofan Voronezh.

Assumption Monastery

The wonders of the shrine behind an inconspicuous wall

And today, a whole block on Petrovka is occupied by a monastery. Few people know about its existence. Tall buildings in narrow streets contribute to good camouflage.

The building of the Naryshkinsky Chambers overlooks Petrovka with a solid wall. It is impossible for people passing by and moving in cars to guess about the presence of monastery buildings here.

The purpose of the longest building in Moscow XVII century. The gate church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin gives the gate. This small part of the chic splendor of the monastery is visible from anywhere in the Karetny Ryad and Petrovka. One of the Moscow streets got its name thanks to the famous monastery.

Under the Intercession Church are the Holy Gates. Those who wish to enter the monastery can go from Petrovka through the indicated front door.

The first impression is comparable to magic. It all starts from the picture seen from the threshold. If you look at the monastery from the inside, you can’t believe that there is a noisy central street outside its walls. On the territory of the shrine is a completely different life. The historical ensemble is in excellent condition, and much larger than from the city.

High Petrovsky Monastery

A gift for centuries

Perhaps the blessing of Cyril Naryshkin, who was the grandfather of Peter, played a role in the existence of the building. It was he who gave the Petrovsky monastery a neighbor's estate when he learned about the good news - the birth of a grandson.

Almost all the buildings of the monastery are connected with events in the life of the Naryshkins. Young Peter personally signed decrees for the construction of the monastery - his first project. Here Natalya Kirillovna Naryshkina laid the foundation for the famous Naryshkin baroque. Mother Petra was brought up in a "Western" spirit, which a little later will affect the history of architecture of the country.

The territory of the monastery. From the tomb to the cathedral

Before entering the Vysoko-Petrovsky Monastery, the Cathedral of the Bogolyubsky Icon of the Mother of God is located.

The building was the family tomb of the Naryshkins until 1774. For two decades, representatives of the Naryshkin family lived here: Ivan, Afanasy, Kirill Poluektovich (grandfather of Peter I), grandmother of Peter - Anna Leontyevna, Lev Kirillovich (uncle of Peter).

The Bogolyubsky church above the graves of the slain is dedicated to the icon of Our Lady of Bogolyubskaya. The temple remained a patrimonial tomb for a long time. The miraculous Bogolyubsky icon of the Mother of God was donated by the Naryshkins along with the list in 1684, during a pilgrimage to Bogolyubovo. According to one legend, the young Peter ran up the steep stairs here as in a private chapel.

Knowing the miracles of this icon and for the sake of his murdered relatives, the young king adopted a decree on the construction of a stone church over the graves of lost relatives. The construction was carried out under the leadership of Natalia Kirillovna and young Peter I.

On the current observer of history, these white-stone gravestones with coats of arms and skulls make an eerie impression.

Baroque footprints

An unexpected building in the very center of the monastery buildings is the Cathedral of Peter the Metropolitan. Unlike other temples, a small, modest in architectural concept, the cathedral is the oldest church building in Moscow.

Layering of the 18th century had little effect on it. The excellent preservation pleased historians on the eve of the Olympics of the 80s.

The Cathedral of Peter the Metropolitan acquires a clear baroque style under Peter I. During the restoration in the 20th century, it was unexpected to see the original view of the temple.

The saving walls of the holy church

A small but unique architectural structure - the church of the Tolga Icon of the Mother of God - is located between the Brotherhood Corps and the Holy Gate, to the right of the entrance.

St. Sergius Church - a new architectural structure. August 1689 is famous for the confrontation between Peter and Sophia. This is the period when Pyotr Alekseevich found his salvation in the Trinity-Sergius Monastery from his cruel and decisive sister Sofia Alekseevna. This year's events include dedication to the Tolga icon. The church was built at the expense of N. A. Naryshkina, who is a relative of Peter I through her mother.

Through the gallery to the cathedral

Further along the monastery is the temple of St. Sergius of Radonezh, built on the orders of Peter I. His story confirms the events of 1689 - the salvation of Peter from his sister with archers in the walls of the monastery of St. Sergius of Radonezh.

Currently, the center of life in the monastery is this temple. Its appearance is in excellent condition after restoration. However, ministers of the church and parishioners recall that the aisles of Alexy of Moscow and M. Voronezh were lost from the common building. These structural elements were destroyed in Soviet times.

The Chambers of the Naryshkins and the Church of St. Sergius are connected by a gallery. You can get to the "southern" courtyard by going under the gallery.

It is in this temple that the important shrines of the monastery are located - the relics of St. Peter, Metropolitan of Kiev, Moscow and All Russia, the miracle worker. Also in the temple - part of the holy relics of the apostles Peter and Paul, Seraphim and other saints.

High Petrovsky Monastery how to get there

The modern life of temples

The church of the Apostles Peter and Paul is considered among the parishioners as an “unlucky" building. For almost a century he stood closed. By and large, these are the consequences of the devastation from the invasion of the army of Napoleon.

Later, the church was re-consecrated in the name of other saints, then it was again closed during the Soviet era. A beautiful church today is closed.

The last temple of the Vysoko-Petrovsky Monastery is the Church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, built in 1905. It was designed as a chapel in the southern passage near the main monastery gate. Only in 2001 it was decided to consecrate the former chapel as the temple of the same name.

“Restoration” by time

The Soviet period (since 1950) was marked for the Vysoko-Petrovsky Monastery as a time of good restoration. Ten years of operation affected the stucco molding and paint - the decoration flew around and cracked, giving the appearance an imprint of noble antiquity. The interior also reflects the spirit of past years. The draft of the past years of the Moscow landscape is reminiscent of a slope that has survived towards the already defunct Neglinka River.

New status

Vysoko-Petrovsky Stauropegial Monastery received the status of the Patriarchal Compound in 1990. From this moment, the restoration began again. All construction work takes place calmly, nothing violates the usual monastic quiet life.

In the Naryshkin Chambers, and in our time, the exhibition halls of the State Literary Museum are located.

Numerous tourists and pilgrims want to know how to get to the Vysoko-Petrovsky Monastery. How to get to the holy monastery?

Divine services are held in almost all temples available. This suggests that the Vysoko-Petrovsky Stauropegial Monastery is functioning.

In 1690, the cathedral of Metropolitan Peter was revised in a new way: the windows expanded, a cottage with tombstones as steps was arranged. The exterior walls are painted in bright motifs.

During the unrest of 1812, the stauropegial monastery was used to accommodate thousands of cavalrymen of the Napoleonic army. The executed Muscovites accused of arson are buried along the walls of the church building.

The cloister was ruined. Thanks to the efforts of the abbot, the valuables were taken to Yaroslavl on time, so the losses were small.

Since 1923, the Vysoko-Petrovsky Monastery was used as a secret fraternal community. But it was located at the monastery in the Bogolyubsky church. Since the Soviet government kept the parish, only one thing was the Bogolyubsky church. By 1935, many monks were shot and the church was completely destroyed.

In 1959, all monastery buildings were recognized as historical monuments; restoration was proceeding at a slow pace. The monastery buildings were used for the most unexpected things, for example, under the rehearsal room of the ensemble "Birch".

Since 1991, the buildings of the monastery have finally passed on to their purpose - to the church.
