Exhaust pipe: varieties, purpose, malfunctions

Any car is equipped with both an intake and exhaust system. Many may find that the exhaust pipe is just a continuation of the exhaust manifold, which serves solely to exhaust the exhaust gas without any extraneous benefit to the engine. To some extent, this statement is true, but its futility can be argued. First of all, it is worth saying that the exhaust systems are quite complex and are the result of lengthy calculations, which include such values as diameter, shape, length, as well as the volume of the resonator and silencer.

Exhaust pipe

Exhaust pipes can be made of various materials: heat-resistant, lightweight, stainless, chrome-plated and so on. It all depends on what temperature conditions they will work on, how visible they will be outside. Weight also plays a large role, as replacing the exhaust system is often done to lighten the car to make it more dynamic.

Now about the diameter. An enlarged exhaust pipe has an increased throughput, therefore, engine ventilation is improved. In addition, the pressure in the system is significantly reduced, which means that the noise of the gases at the outlet is also reduced. Naturally, each car owner will not be opposed to improving this indicator of his car.

Exhaust system replacement

The exhaust pipes are often made of stainless steel. The fact is that they have an increased melting point, and also have a low weight and ideal anti-corrosion properties. Plus, stainless steel is easier to process, as it is softer than other grades of metal.

If the engine has a large volume, then the exhaust pipe can be divided into two streams. There are such cases when the exhaust pipe leaves the unit itself alone, but the silencer has the width of the entire car, so two pipes exit from it.

More often, you can find an exhaust system in which for every 3 or 4 cylinders an exhaust manifold is attached, that is, the exhaust pipe is simply duplicated. This design is widely used in V-shaped engines, since it is not difficult to branch them, and their volume, as a rule, is three liters or more. In small engines, such a system is not used, since it only increases the cost of the car without visible improvements, such a refinement becomes solely the initiative of the owner.

Exhaust pipes

A fairly common problem with the exhaust system is its deformation. Naturally, in our country such a situation is not uncommon, since the quality of our roads is well known to everyone. Car owners in such situations ask themselves: β€œIs it harmful to the engine?” Yes, not critical. This means that the operation of the car can continue in the same mode as it was carried out, but it is worth replacing the damaged part of the system as soon as possible. To do this, all systems are made collapsible, so that you can carry out this procedure easier and without replacing the entire site.

Many car owners believe that the exhaust system does not require any maintenance. This is partly true, but there are some nuances. First of all, it is necessary to monitor its external state, so that the above situation does not arise. It should also be kept in mind when driving that the exhaust pipe is the lowest point of the car. In case of burnout or other damage to the pipe with a replacement, you should not pull it, because the level of external noise increases sharply, and the ride becomes uncomfortable.
