VAZ family cars have many features in terms of maintenance, and one of them is oil getting into the candle wells. The reasons for this phenomenon can be different, in many respects everything depends on the specific model and type of engine. Today we will consider what threatens to leak oil in the spark plug wells of ICE and how to solve this problem with our own hands.
Causes of failure and solutions
This kind of trouble happens quite often. Let's figure out why. Oil in spark plug wells appears due to wear on the gaskets. In general, this problem is not so dangerous, in any case, not so much as, for example, getting the same lubricant on the cylinder head. Perhaps the most serious consequence of this problem is the softening of the rubber insulator of high-voltage wires, which, in turn, will cause a breakdown. But this does not mean at all that you can let things go by themselves. Did you notice that oil gets into the candle well? Change the gaskets immediately - and the problem will be solved. Otherwise, it is necessary to change the candles very often (usually their resource is reduced several times).
How to make a repair?
We have already found out why oil forms in candle wells, now we’ll talk about how to replace gaskets. First, we need to prepare all the spare parts and materials. In the course of performing leak repair work, you will need:
- Two valve cover gaskets.
- 10 sealing washers.
- WD 40 grease and silicone grease.
- 4 oil seals candle wells.
- Engine cleaner.
Having prepared everything you need, you can safely get to work. In general, the process of replacing gaskets for wells can be divided into several stages:
- Removing the valve cover.
- Dismantling the wells.
- Removing old o-rings and installing new ones.
- Reverse assembly.
More detailed instructions
Below we will consider in detail how to eliminate oil in the candle wells of the 2112th VAZ and other models of cars at the Volga Automobile Plant.
So where do you get started? First remove the plastic engine cover and receiver. All openings that are in the intake manifold are closed by caps (this is necessary for us in order to prevent the penetration of foreign objects into the part). Next, the ignition module is removed, as well as the crankcase ventilation hose from the cylinder block cover pipe. Then, with the help of a key, the bolt of the bracket for the connector of the injector wiring harness is loosened by 10. With an 8-ring spanner, 15 fastening screws on the cylinder block cover are unscrewed (it is also called a valve). After that, the block cover itself is removed from the machine.
Checking the hydraulic pusher
Next, check the hydraulic pusher. How to do it? Everything is very simple - with a soft metal drift (or with a simple screwdriver) just click on it and trace its further state. Ideally, the hydraulic pusher should be pressed with great effort.
But if you put a minimum of force for this, then most likely this device needs to be replaced. By the way, when diagnosing the hydraulic pusher, the camshaft cam must be directed to the first back side.
How to replace this part?
Since we cannot neglect replacing the hydraulic pusher in the course of solving our problem, we will devote a couple of words to replacing this device.
The first step is to remove the camshaft pulleys and the wire from the oil pressure lamp sensor. Next, with a ring spanner, 8 unscrews 20 mounting bolts of the bearing housing of this shaft.
The bolt connecting the rod to the rear engine mount bracket must also be removed. Then 3 nuts are removed at the same place with a 15 key. After that, the rear support bracket will not be securely fastened, and it can be safely removed (as well as the camshaft bearing housing). The guide tubes of the spark plugs are removed from the latter. Next, camshafts are removed from the housing. Do not forget about oil seals.
At the next stage, 2 rear plugs of the cylinder block and the camshaft bearing housing are dismantled. To remove the hydraulic pusher, a magnet is applied to its end part, and the part is successfully removed from the head socket.
Before assembly, the cylinder head is thoroughly cleaned of dirt, and the camshaft bearing housing is cleaned of oil and old sealants. Further, the cams of the shafts and the journal journals are lubricated with new engine oil.
A special substance (sealant) “Loktayt No. 574” is applied to the surface of the bearing housing, which mates with the cylinder head, with a 2-mm flagellum. Next, the case is installed back into place.
Now it is necessary to lubricate the O-rings and install the guide pipes in the holes of the cylinder head and bearing housing. After that, new camshafts are pressed in , and plugs are installed on the back of the unit.
Before installing the cylinder head cover, it is necessary to apply a sealant on its surface (the same “Loktayt”, which eliminates the oil in the candle wells). Priora VAZ, however, can be repaired in another way. Which ones - read further in the article.
What to do if oil is formed in the candle wells? Solving the problem in an alternative way
Consider a faster method to resolve the problem, which will occur without dismantling the receiver and valve cover. However, here we need a special tool. And here many motorists have difficulties. The fact is that this tool (we are talking about a candle ring o-ring puller) is very difficult to find in stores, so drivers often have to make it with their own hands.
How to make a puller?
Everything is very simple and cheap. To assemble this tool, you need to have a metal stud with a length of at least 15 centimeters, a piece of rubber hose with a diameter of 20-25 millimeters, several washers, nuts and one sleeve. What to do with all this? First, a washer is put on a long hairpin, then an elastic band, a sleeve and nuts. Everything - the candle ring o-ring puller was successfully made! The cost of such an instrument is not more than 100 rubles, and it can be done in almost a few minutes. So you very quickly remove the oil in the candle wells. Priora and many other models of domestic cars are repaired with this tool.
Make sure that the elastic is clamped on both sides by washers. Moreover, the diameter of the latter should be as close as possible to the width of the candle well itself. Otherwise, the clamped gum will crawl out into the gap between the well and the washer, but we do not need this.
The pull handle is made of a valve nut. The lower washer should abut against the tip of the stud, and the upper one is pressed by the sleeve.
So, we begin repair. First, the puller is inserted into the spark plug well, after which the lower nut is tightened until the moment when the axial movement of the tool gives us the opportunity to pull out the well. After a little effort, the glass will be successfully removed.
During the execution of work, pay attention to the fact that the rubber part of the inserted puller does not protrude in height beyond the well. Similarly to the first case, we install new oil seals, lubricate with oil and assemble in the reverse order. By the way, the installation process will take you less time than when dismantling.
Nuances in the performance of work
If you decide to resort to the second option, do not forget about the rules of operation and work with this puller, otherwise you will not be able to remove oil in the candle wells. What, in fact, are we talking about? We explain.
Firstly, the gum of the tool should be immersed in the candle well in full size. Otherwise, it will gradually expand, and you will not be able to remove the glass.
Secondly, when removing the well, there is a likelihood of the valve cover being displaced, which can subsequently block the key output. But since the glass wall thickness is too small, it is easy to remove the part with a long thin screwdriver.
Thirdly, when pulling out the spark plug, make sure that the old lower oil seal does not slip.
To summarize
In the first case, we spent about 4 hours of time and about one and a half thousand rubles on all the necessary work. Using the second method, you will spend no more than 1.5 hours on repairs, since the need to remove and reinstall the receiver and valve cover will be eliminated.
So, we found out why oil forms in candle wells and how to fix this problem with our own hands. Do not break!
