Resurrection Church in Voronezh: history, architecture, schedule of services, address

The Resurrection Church in Voronezh belongs to one of the most ancient churches of the city, and is an architectural monument of all-Russian significance. Located in the city center near the symbol of Voronezh - Stone Bridge.

Story

The Resurrection Church In Voronezh, was erected by coachmen in 1752 on the site of another, wooden church, which burned down in a fire in 1748.

At that time it was the outskirts of the city - Yamskaya Sloboda. To protect themselves from further fires, it was decided to build a stone church. The temple was built two-story, solid and durable.

First, the first floor was built. In 1761, the limit was consecrated in honor of the Nativity of the glorious honest Prophet, Forerunner and Baptist of the Lord John. The completely lower church began to operate in 1765.

The second floor was completed, consecrated and named in honor of the Resurrection of Christ in 1768. It was not heated and was used only in the summer.

Five years later, a major fire occurred in Voronezh, as a result of which most of the city buildings were damaged. But the Resurrection Church did not touch the fire. With the restoration of the city, its borders expanded significantly, and the church ended up in the very center of Voronezh.

Before the revolution, the Resurrection Church in Voronezh was not subject to change. With the advent of Soviet power, the church was closed and used as a warehouse.

During the war, the temple was occupied by the Germans, who set up an observation post on the bell tower. As a result of fierce fighting for the city of Voronezh, the bell tower and the second floor of the Resurrection Church were destroyed.

After the victory over fascist Germany, the surviving lower floor was again assigned to an industrial warehouse.

By the 90s, the temple was almost destroyed. In 1987, it was declared emergency and unsuitable for use.

Architecture and appearance

In 1993, the Resurrection Church in disrepair was returned to the Orthodox Church. The church cemetery near him was not preserved by that time. Monuments and graves of representatives of famous merchant dynasties of the city of Voronezh were destroyed and razed to the ground.

Initially, the temple was erected in the style of a provincial baroque and was a massive octagon mounted on a quadruple of the first floor. The building was devoid of any decorations and looked ascetic.

But the bell tower in front of the temple was different from the rest of the building. As well as the porch portal, the pediment of which has a curved shape with a semicircular recess and rests on four columns. This building was surprising with its stucco decorations: there were baskets of flowers, sculptures of angels, unusual patterns of capitals.

Now many features of the baroque decoration are lost and remained only in photographs. The building itself was restored exactly in accordance with the original.
