Nick Mason, the permanent drummer of the great rock group Pink Floyd, spoke about his musical career in the biographical book Inside Out. A Personal History of Pink Floyd (2004).
The beginning of the friendly and creative relationship of budding rock musicians began in the spring of 1963, when Roger Waters, Richard Wright and Nick Mason studied at the Royal Polytechnic Institute on Regent Street in London (now Westminster University). They entered the Faculty of Architecture in September 1962.
But the success that their passion for music brought them eclipsed everything: none of them had to finish this wonderful educational institution. Nick Mason's academic leave was unlimited. After the summer holidays of 1966, a splendid ascent of a rock band called The Pink Floyd Sound began (then with Sid Barrett, and then with David Gilmore).
Tops of rock music
In 1973, Nick Mason as part of Pink Floyd achieved world-class success: the album The Dark Side Of The Moon to this day remains one of the most famous creations of progressive rock.
This album is among the best-selling in the history of sound recording. True, Mason, recalling those times, ironically noted: the album "number one in America" was not a sufficient guarantee for obtaining a bank loan in England. The manager demanded something more real and concrete.
Numerous tours, concerts, festivals, studio recordings - only with extraordinary hard work and talent could one succeed. One of the chapters of Mason’s autobiographical book is called “Hard Work”. But the result of the collaboration of Pink Floyd musicians is amazing: there is no music lover who is not familiar with Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977), The Wall (1979).
According to Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, all attempts to do solo things from the very beginning of the band's existence did not produce such an outstanding result as joint creative work, which took place in heated discussions.
Personal life
Nick Mason was born on January 27, 1944 in Birmingham. He became interested in rock music at the age of 12.
Among his own achievements, Mason especially notes that he received a driver’s license in 1961 - at the age of 17. Nick carried his love of cars and racing throughout his life: he acted as a racer and wrote a book about cars from his collection of sports and racing cars.
Mason's parents supported his passion for both machines and music. His father, Bill Mason, was a director of documentaries (the film crew of Shell). Parents not only attended the very first concerts of the group, but also were able to provide financial support when the equipment of young musicians was stolen.
