As early as 1935, mining began in the city of Lytkarino on Lake Volkusha. The choice of the place of reclamation was not in vain: it was in this place that quartz sand is distinguished by its exceptional white color.
Volkushinsky quarry in Lytkarino - a place for the extraction of sand for the manufacture of high-quality glass. It is here that the plant of optical material is laid. Research was carried out by the famous geologist - Pavlov A.P., who described the area in his book "Across the Moscow Region" in 1927. According to him, during the survey of the lake, its depth ranged from 10 to 20 meters, and the sand itself is so white that it seems that you get into a snow pit.
In 1939, LZOS was already setting up production output. In the first batch - 5 floodlights with a diameter of 1.5 meters. At that time, it was from the vicinity of Lytkarino that about 10% of quartz sand was supplied to the glass industry.
In 1974, the quarry was mothballed due to depletion of reserves.
Present time
Since the conservation of mining, the quarries in Lytkarino have been completely filled with water. Now the reservoir area is about 30 m 2 , but nothing is known about the depth. At the end of the last century, beaches around the lake have been landscaped. Sandstone blocks were taken out, and the banks around were planted with pine trees. Since 2010, entertainment infrastructure began to appear on the banks.

The quarry in Lytkarino can be said to be within walking distance of the capital. The city is located 10 km from the city of Lyubertsy and 6 km from the Moscow Ring Road (on the southeast side).
