Creative and social activities
In addition to teaching, a talented artist is engaged in writing paintings in many genres using graphic and pictorial techniques. The range of genres is wide enough - these are figured compositions, landscape, portrait, nude. Engaged in literary and historical reminiscences, as well as illustration.
In 2006, Chernov founded the Insight creative association. Two years later, Denis Chernov becomes a member of the Union of Artists of Ukraine, conducts scientific work. On his account eight scientific publications in the publication "Bulletin of the Kharkov State Academy of Design and Arts."
The emergence of Chernov as an artist
According to the artist himself, he owes his success to the teachers of the Kharkov Art College and KhGADI. Chernov singles out Yuri Leonidovich Dyatlov, a teacher of plastic anatomy and drawing at the school, from this galaxy of famous artist-teachers. The teacher was able to convey knowledge and skills to his talented student, who began to actively implement them.
Like any person of creative nature, Chernov repeatedly took part in thematic exhibitions. The first “pen test” took place in 1996, when he exhibited his works at an exhibition of students of the Kharkov Art College, while still in his third year at this educational institution.
This was followed by regional and All-Ukrainian exhibitions with the participation of Chernov, and in 2000 the artist organized his first solo exhibition under the name "Experience". It took place in the Kharkov club "Constellations".
Soon, the artist with his works went beyond the borders of Ukraine: in April 2002, in New York, under the auspices of the international project Art-expo, his personal graphic exhibition was held. In the future, such events were organized almost every year.
The works of Chernov Denis are familiar to residents of Moscow, Ryazan, Nuremberg, Athens, Barcelona, Turin, Stoliv (Montenegro), Taipei (Taiwan), and California. At the moment, Chernov has about 80 Ukrainian and international exhibitions, of which more than twenty have passed abroad.
Features of the artist
The average viewer undeservedly bypasses the schedule, which is not supported by experts, including the hero of this article. Artist Chernov Denis, whose work is known today in many countries, prefers drawings made with ordinary graphite pencil. However, the monochrome of these works is somehow not noticed. The richness of light and its nuances, contrast and many textures, as well as the presence of nature allow these drawings to compete on equal terms with painting.
The artist is distinguished by the ability to see in the small the whole infinity of the world and, conversely, in the infinite expanses of the earth to notice and reflect on the canvas some small detail. And the pencil gives the artist a great opportunity to convey the vastness of the universe, while not missing the beauty of a small part of this world in which you can see its reflection.
In Chernov’s works one can see a combination of natural nature and nature, to which the human hand has already touched. The contrast of drawings of such subjects involuntarily makes one think about the role of man in the world around him.
Chernov himself considers himself to be an academic school of fine art, so nature is the basis of his work. In his opinion, working with her provides invaluable experience, because photography does not convey the full depth of tonal relationships. As a result, the artist receives a certain life experience, which can be combined with existing knowledge and get an excellent result on a piece of paper.
Chernov on the schedule
According to Denis Chernov, the artist cannot neglect graphic works, considering them unworthy of special attention for their apparent ease in writing. Meanwhile, the master has to spend 40-50 hours of pure time on only one drawing. It should be borne in mind that at the indicated time such works as collecting material, impressions, sketching sketches are not included, but this is a very complex and tedious process. All this explains the fact that Denis usually estimates his graphic works more expensive than painting.
An important role is played even by the way a pencil creates a drawing and how it is sharpened. This is important when laying the basic tonal relationships, since an improperly sharpened pencil will create a loose shade on paper, which is not always required by the artist.
Similar requirements for the eraser. An uninitiated person sees in him a tool for removing unnecessary elements of a picture, but in the artist’s hands he plays a different role: it helps to create the right light, texture, volume. Therefore, the eraser should be made of high-quality material, sharpened with a sharpness similar to a pencil.
Interesting Facts
The fact that the teacher Yuri Dyatlov managed to convey his knowledge and skills to Denis Chernov is indicated by such an interesting fact: later, when Chernov himself entered the galaxy of famous artists, he began to specifically introduce stylized elements into his drawings. This was done so that the viewer could still distinguish a drawing from a photo, since without these elements it was extremely difficult for an ordinary person to do it.
The fact is that for the accuracy of transferring objects to paper, Chernov was called the “photographer”, “photocopy”, the images in his graphic works were so natural. Nevertheless, Denis Chernov, whose paintings are famous for naturalism, believes that he has not reached the level of his beloved teacher. In his opinion, Dyatlov’s work is more impressive with its forms and texture, subtlety of transmission and quality.
Denis is a nominee for the 2009 ARS Salon (Art Renewal Center). The victory in the nomination “Drawing” was brought to him by the graphic work “Boat” of 2001.
For merits in such an area as modern painting, Chernov Denis was awarded the medal “Talent and Calling” of the International Association “Peacemaker”.
Graphics and painting masters
Chernov Denis is an artist whose paintings are distinguished by the reasonableness and logic of the composition. If you carefully look at his work, you will notice that almost all of them are flooded with light. The brightness of the artist’s vision is amazing. With it, the artist colorfully conveys the whole atmosphere of what is happening on the canvas.
This is especially striking in the pictures depicting the morning pore, when the air is transparent and clean, when everything is just awakening.
Chernov’s landscapes fascinate the viewer at the same time both with their depth and the drawing of the foreground.
And all this he manages to do with just a pencil and an eraser.
A special place in the artist's works is reserved for portraits. It remains only to wonder how he manages to convey the beauty and impeccability of the human body, its spirituality and purity. And here on equal terms there is a competition between graphics and painting.
Pictures almost with photographic accuracy convey all the nuances of the image.
The picturesque works more vividly and colorfully convey the gamut of colors of the picture, which is no less brilliant than the graphic image.
The significance of the work of D. V. Chernov
Chernov by his work destroys the stereotypes that prevail in the world about the advantage of painting over graphics.
