The MAZ-5516 truck belongs to the family of three-axle dump trucks having a wheel formula of type 6 * 4. The car is produced at the Minsk Automobile Plant since 1994. In this line, there are models with bodies equipped with a rear or three-way type of unloading. The car is also used as a road train, for a one-time transportation of large volumes of bulk cargo. Briefly about creating a vehicle

The MAZ-5516 car was "born" back in the days of the Soviet Union. It is characterized by simplicity of design, practicality and minimal, but convenient equipment of the driver's seat. In all internal equipment - a minimum of superfluous, only the required functionality for work. At the same time, a high coefficient of maintainability and patency is noted.

The capacity of the machine is 20 tons. Along with an affordable price, this parameter determined the popularity of the vehicle in various economic sectors. The main field of application is construction. The machine is indispensable for the construction of roads, transportation of various bulk materials, including stone, sand, gravel and crushed stone. In addition, the car is used to transport hot asphalt and crumbs on public and special roads.

Application

In the agricultural sector, the MAZ-5516 dump truck is suitable for transportation of fertilizers, crops, soil, compost. In production there was a special modification of the truck, which was intended for transporting grain. This grain truck was distinguished by a cargo platform with an increased volume, equipped with a system of bilateral lateral unloading.

In the forestry sector, the truck in question is equipped with a special platform, from two to six meters long, on which the used wood is laid. In addition, it is suitable for transporting waste and wood chips at various distances.

The design of the MAZ-5516 dump truck uses a suspension spring-balancing type with a reinforced double frame (a two-in-one spar). The metal body is triggered by a hydraulic device. In addition, there are modifications with a bucket mechanism and an opening side.

Modifications

To date, three modifications of the MAZ-5516 remain in mass production:

  1. Version 5516A5 is equipped with a diesel power plant YaMZ-6582.10 (Euro-3). The power indicator is 330 horsepower (243 kW).
  2. The 5516A8 model is equipped with a more powerful series of motors (based on the YaMZ-7511.10E2). Their strength is 400 “horses. Both modifications have Yaroslavl gearshift units, a tipper platform with three-way unloading. Car loading capacity - 20 tons.
  3. Cummins engines are installed on a truck under serial number 5516W4-420. They comply with the Euro-4 standard, have a power rating of 300 “horses”, aggregate with a gearbox into nine ranges. The tipper platform of the car has a “trough” configuration; it functions only with the rear type of unloading. The carrying capacity standard is 15 tons.

Next, we study in more detail the main components and systems of this vehicle. Let's start with the powertrain.

The predominant part of this type of dump trucks, which continue to operate in various post-Soviet countries, was produced with diesel power plants from the Yaroslavl Motor Plant. The engine is a turbine unit with eight cylinders and a speed of 1900/2100 rotations per minute. The power indicators of these motors are indicated above.

Between themselves, the two most popular brands of engines differ in the type of fuel equipment control, the presence of an electronic regulator, and a change in the design of parts and components. Moreover, both versions are characterized by a closed crankcase ventilation system and a common configuration of cylinder heads.

The power plant MAZ-5516, the characteristics of which are indicated above, is fixed at one front and two side points. There is also an additional fixture for mounting the motor. For access and maintenance of the unit, the cab leans back using a hydraulic device. In the transport position, it is fixed by means of a locking mechanism and a safety cable. 350 liters of fuel are placed in the fuel tank of the car, the consumption of which is about 30 l / 100 km.

Transmission unit

Depending on the type of power plant, a YaMZ-2391 or YaMZ-2381 gearbox is mounted on the MAZ-5516 car, the photo of which is shown below. They have a twin main mode, five working stages, a planetary gear (with a gear ratio of 7.24). With foreign motors, a mechanical transmission aggregates into nine modes such as ZF 9S-109 or JS-135 / TA. These nodes are more responsive and efficient, but also more expensive.

The trucks in question use the clutch of the Yaroslavl production (184-15). It is a dry friction unit with one disk, diaphragm exhaust spring, friction linings without asbestos. The driven element is equipped with elastic fastening elements and a spring-friction damper.

Steering and brakes

The rather solid dimensions of the MAZ-5516 suggest the presence of effective steering with an integrated distributor, main steering wheel, column, power cylinder, pump, pipelines and an oil tank.

In terms of brakes on the truck there are four systems:

  • The main node.
  • Parking brake.
  • Auxiliary system.
  • Spare option.

In addition, devices are used to activate the locking system of a pneumatically driven semi-trailer.

The main brake acts on all wheels through the drums, in all versions there is an "ABS" system. The parking and spare unit are aggregated with the brake parts of the rear and middle axles, and are driven by special compartments.

The auxiliary part is activated by creating a back pressure effect in the exhaust gas chamber. It is used for small braking on long descents and mountain roads.

Cabin

Like the MAZ-5516 body, the truck cab has recognizable features and a configuration typical of these cars. The element is rectangular with smooth corners. The impressive front bumper serves for passive protection. Designers have developed an elongated and standard version of the cab. The degree of comfort is minimal.

The driver's seat is sprung, provided for its adjustment and the ability to adjust the steering column. It is worth noting the presence of a good heater and decent noise isolation. To reduce vibration load and improve ride comfort, the cab is equipped with spring springs with shock absorbers.

Interior fittings

The truck in question is equipped with pneumatic shock absorbers under the driver’s chair, which contribute to a more comfortable movement, even on a rather difficult terrain. The seat is equipped with devices for vertical and horizontal adjustment, the back is adjustable in angle. By special order, the manufacturer also installs head restraints and elbow pads.

In the elongated version of the cabin, the shelves are located behind the backs of the "seats", they are easily separated from the working area with the help of partitions or curtains. The tunnel has a glove box, which is also used as a table. Good visibility is provided by a high driver's seat and multilevel side rear-view mirrors. Seat belts are equipped with three fixation points, guarantee reliable retention of the driver and passengers in case of emergency. Such equipment applies to modern MAZ-5516 dump trucks.

Until the mid-nineties of the last century, Soviet pragmatism prevailed here, minimal attention to comfort and asceticism. Double-panel doors are made of sheet steel by stamping, welded and rolled around the perimeter. In the middle of the inner part of the door, hatches are provided for installing and removing glass, a lock and a drive of a locking mechanism of a rotor type.
