The development of civilization does not stand still. Once our predecessors rejoiced at the invention of the first telephones, cars and computers, but with the advent of the Internet, we became happy owners of demotivators and, lo and behold, memes who are trying to somehow brighten up the existence of web space.
It is impossible to enter the network without stumbling upon another meme: trollface, lolface and a bunch of other faces. Recently, facespalm has become especially popular. What is it?
What is the face and where is the palm
What does facespalm mean? From a linguistic point of view, this word consists of the English constituents face (“face”) and palm (“palm”), but in RuNet the word “rudiment” quickly scattered, the main idea, in principle, conveying. This term refers to a gesture full of disappointment, shame and even grief for the fate of individuals and humanity as a whole. You can freely use a funny picture in response to outright stupidity, information that is knowingly false, and indeed to everything that you consider unacceptable for any reason. The simplicity of the meme is also surprising - its meaning is clear to everyone, regardless of racial, gender or social affiliation.
Star facespalm - what kind of beast is it?
Where did the facepalm come from, is pretty difficult to figure out. Perhaps the first to appear were memes depicting a model of Jim Horn, where he slightly covers his disgusted face with his hand. But the most popular was the silhouette with Picard, captain of the Enterprise ship of the Star Trek universe, performed by Patrick Stewart (aka Professor X). The audience liked me so much that they began to be sought out by fans in each series of Star Trek, in various situations and poses. Pictures of Picard sitting on the captain’s chair, squatting, sitting next to Data crawled across the Internet (moreover, he also had the same gesture). In their search, many swung at the sacred - captain Kirk and Spock, finding them with a gesture of “little face”. Well, at least they looked at the classics of science fiction .

But the gesture is not limited by the scope of Star Trek, and many quickly find the facepalm in their favorite films and series - hence the appearance of the memes “I'm ashamed, I'm not with them” by Homer Simpson, Dr. House, King Theoden and even Ernie from Sesame Street. The enthusiasm for funny shots went so far that, in addition to tens of thousands of quickly dispersed demotivators, memes, and just pictures, the facepalm emoticon was also thought up - the familiar yellow bun that brings a chubby palm to the head (although in his case to the whole body) and sadly, even bitterly, this head is shaking. And in some cases, the smiley also raises his eyebrows sarcastically. Here is such a facespalm! There is no doubt that this is an ideal way of self-expression for lovers of sarcasm and other caustic humor.
I am ashamed
In general, the popularity of facespalm is gaining momentum, more and more options are appearing, and they are no longer limited by the scope of the Starfleet, nor by cinema in general, nor even by belonging to the human race. Cute cats with no less cute “dejected gestures” are actively gaining popularity. But no matter how funny the meme may seem at first glance, we can say about the facepalm, that this is exactly what reflects the sad situation of the whole generation. And this is a shame.
