Ukrainian poet Taras Grigorievich Shevchenko is a great man and figure, a national hero of his country. The years of his life - 1814-1861. The primary role in Shevchenko’s literary heritage is poetry. Everyone knows his collection "Kobzar", which is the basis of modern Ukrainian literature and especially the Ukrainian language.
Many of his works are written in Russian, which gives the right to relate it to Russian literature. He achieved great achievements in painting, the portrait became his main hobby. Shevchenko wrote mostly self-portraits, which are very popular.
short biography
Taras was born in 1814, March 9 (February 25), in the village of Morintsi, Kiev province. He lost his mother extremely early when he was 9 years old. After her death, her father married a woman with three children. The stepmother did not like Taras and was cruel to him. And at the age of 12, Shevchenko lost his father.
Very early on, he began to write poetry and draw. And being an orphan, he sought and found for himself teachers, sometimes very cruel. When he was 16, he began to serve on the estate. The owner very often beat Taras for his passion for painting, but then took pity on him and sent him to study with the master Shiryaev. Shevchenko later met with Soshenko, Bryullov, Zhukovsky and Venetsianov. It was these people who were able to buy it from the landowner.
Bryullov painted Zhukovsky and sold his portrait at auction. Shevchenko bought out for the proceeds from the sale of money. This was a salvation for a creative person who was able to engage in his activities freely.
The dawn of his work fell on the years 1840-1847. But due to allegations of political treason, Shevchenko was sent into exile in 1846, where the worst thing for him was that it was impossible to write and draw. But the government found out that he was painting landscapes, and sent him to a new link, where he stayed until 1857.
He was released for health reasons. A year after gaining freedom, he lived with F. Tolstoy. Then he went home. And in 1861, March 10 (February 26), he died.
Shevchenko in literature
At the dawn of his work, Taras Grigorievich presented readers with such colossal works as “Gaydamaki”, “Poplars”, “Khustochka”, “Katerina”, “Conviction”, “Naimichka”. All of them were written in Ukrainian, which is why they were criticized.
During the exile, Shevchenko wrote several works in Russian, among them: “The Artist”, “Princess”, “Gemini”. They contain a lot of autobiographical information.

To date, many drawings and paintings by T. G. Shevchenko have been preserved. His portrait, painted by himself, can be found in books and museums. He spent a lot of effort on drawing picturesque landscapes, trying to show the audience how beautiful the world is.
