A ketogenic diet is used in the treatment of any type of epilepsy. This technique has virtually no side effects. It has no less effect than most modern drugs. The combined use of a ketogenic diet with physiotherapy or taking prescribed medications does not contradict the treatment of epileptic seizures. A ketogenic diet helps to reduce or disappear epileptic seizures. Assign it to adults, as well as children from 1 year.
Ketogenic diet rules
Treatment with this technique should be strictly carried out under the supervision of the attending physician or dietitian. Before the start of the course, clinical and laboratory examinations should be taken, including a biochemical blood test, EEG and ECG.
The diet is prescribed individually for each patient. Important factors in the calculation of the menu is the diagnosis of the patient, his weight and age. If complications arise during treatment, then you should immediately contact a doctor.
Ketogenic diet: diet
The goal of a ketogenic diet is for the patient to use more fat and less glucose to generate energy. This process leads to an increase in the level of ketone bodies in the body (ketosis). In the first 72 hours of treatment, you should completely refuse nutrition. Zero-calorie fluids are allowed. Tea, juice, mineral water are prohibited.
At the initial stage, a ketogenic diet provides for bed rest. In the second stage, you need to consume one fourth of the assigned portion. This treatment method is aimed at four grams of fat per gram of consumed proteins and carbohydrates.
On the 4th, 5th and 6th days of treatment, adults are prescribed the following menu:
- In the morning, eat 2 boiled eggs, a sandwich with butter. Drink green or black tea or coffee with the addition of high fat cream.
- At lunch, you should eat 2 sausages, 1-2 tablespoons of mayonnaise, and 1/4 of the tomato.
- For dinner, use boiled chicken breast, 100 grams of green beans and a couple of spoons of vegetable oil. You can have tea or coffee.
Also for a change of the menu you can eat:
- cabbage soup with sour cream;
- fried eggs;
- salad of onions, cucumber, vegetable oil;
- 100 grams of pork or brisket;
- protein bread.
The effectiveness of a ketogenic diet
Within three months after the start of the application of this technique, an improvement in health status is observed. A ketogenic diet for epilepsy reduces the number of seizures by 50% -90%. If the effect has not occurred, then the attending physician should review the diet.
It must be remembered that such nutrition in epilepsy is not a separate treatment for various types of disease. This is an additional way to combat, which can significantly reduce the number of drugs and avoid many side effects from their use.
To stop treatment with a ketogenic diet, a phased method should be used. At the same time, deep control by medical personnel is required.
