Irregular monthly cycle: what causes it?

The period of menstruation in a woman on average lasts from three to seven days every month. With age, menstruation cycles tend to become stable. Sometimes women, up to several hours, can foresee the approach of critical days. However, there are frequent cases of irregularities caused by both natural causes and health problems. Depending on these reasons and the complexity of the flow of menstruation, you can determine what danger for a woman is an irregular monthly cycle.

Natural causes

The hormones estrogen and progesterone have a strong influence on the stability of the period. So, in the body of pregnant women, so many hormones are produced that usually this causes a temporary interruption of menstruation until a baby is born. An irregular monthly cycle is quite common for young girls at the time of their puberty and for women standing in anticipation of menopause. Every woman experiences similar problems and failures of critical days in her life. This is a natural reaction of the body to hormonal changes, and you should not worry about this. But if during your pregnancy your period suddenly began, then this is a serious reason to consult a doctor.

Mind and body

Nervous shocks are a fairly common cause of an irregular monthly cycle. A large amount of cortisol (โ€œstress hormoneโ€) affects a healthy level of estrogen and progesterone and, therefore, disrupts the stable cycle of menstruation. However, hormonal disruption in the body can be associated with improper nutrition. For example, if you eat a lot of harmful carbohydrates (alcohol, sweets, pastries), then you accumulate excess weight. And during the period of ovulation, the body has to produce the amount of hormones that differs from the usual one, which leads to delays of the period for several days. At the same time, sudden weight loss also causes cycle disruption, especially if you too exhaust your body with exercise. For the process of menstruation, the body needs energy, and if it is not, it can lead to an interruption of the monthly cycle until you restore healthy hormones.

The effect of medicines

Heavy medicines, as you know, can cause a one to two day delay in menstruation, since they have a strong effect on the production of estrogen and progesterone. An irregular monthly cycle is also often found in women taking birth control pills as contraceptives, because the body needs time to adapt to the conditions of the presence of an increased level of hormones.

Incorrect positioning of the spiral inside the uterus is another common cause of a disturbance in the stable monthly period.

Disease

Polycystic ovary syndrome and thyroid hyperthyroidism are two diseases that can cause menstrual irregularities. In such cases, the restoration of the correct hormonal balance in the body usually requires complex treatment under the supervision of a doctor. In especially advanced cases, surgical intervention may be used.
