Inserting locks into a wooden door: the intricacies of work

What in life you just don’t have to face, and those who start repairs should be prepared for the unexpected. If you started a major home renovation, then get ready for the fact that the lock insert also falls on your shoulders, unless you put this matter in the hands of an experienced craftsman. Considering that the cost of work in the workshop is not cheap, and the price of inserting a lock into a wooden door starts at 3,000 rubles, it is better to experiment with the old door to make the door leaf functional independently. The choice of equipment depends on the technology of inserting the lock: professional - using a high-speed tool, amateur - using a hammer and chisel. • a screwdriver or drill - for drilling holes;

Training

1. Decide on the location of the door, figure out which side the hinges will be mounted on and the lock on which side.
2. Place the door leaf in a convenient position, mark the installation location, stepping back from the bottom edge of the door leaf 850-900 mm.
3. Mark the center of the end of the door - put two marks and draw a line indicating the axis of installation of the lock core. This is your guideline.

Markup

1. Take the lock and measure its length, more precisely the part that crashes into the canvas. Apply the formula according to which the length of the lock is divided in half and set aside the resulting number in centimeters from the mounting point of the handle (850-900 mm from the lower end of the door) on both sides, along the transverse center line. This gap is the area of ​​the inset of the castle into the wooden door.
2. Carefully drill the keyhole mounting hole in the end of the door leaf.
3. Using a tape measure, measure the width of the cut-in part of the lock.

Lock frame

1. Choose a drill of the required diameter and install it on a drill or screwdriver. The diameter of the drill should be 1 mm larger than the width of the cut-in part of the lock.
2. Drill the pad for the castle. Set the tip of the drill to one of the extreme points, then, rearranging above, go deep to 1 cm. After that, back off about half the diameter of the drill and make a hole 1 cm deeper than the previous one. Following a straight line, deepen the holes until you reach the extreme top point. The procedure is repeated until the recess for the castle is completely drilled.

Inset sweating

1. Then the lock is inserted and sweat is marked for the decorative strip of the structure, circled by a pencil. Take out the lock.
2. Cut the sweat. Using a manual milling cutter you get a neat, even depression. If there is no such equipment in the house, arm yourself with a hammer and a chisel. Set the latter in a position perpendicular to the end part of the door, and make notches along the entire perimeter of the pot. Slot a recess in the end equal to the thickness of the decorative strip of the lock structure.

Do not forget about accuracy when inserting a lock into a wooden door with a milling cutter. The door leaf coating is thin and delicate - it is very easy to damage it.

Preparing holes for the door handle

Now, the master is faced with the task of preparing holes for the handle and the secret of the lock (if any).

1. Make markup first. Transfer the centers of the holes from the lock to the door leaf, using a measuring tape and a pencil for marks.
2. Place the pen on the drill by selecting a larger drill bit and drill through holes.
3. As soon as the tip of the drill appears from the opposite side, turn off the screwdriver and move to the other side. Repeat this procedure exactly the opposite.

Remember that when drilling holes on one side only, there is a high risk of damage to the exterior of the door leaf. Therefore, it is better to follow the above instructions and perform these works in stages.
